South Georgia has the tradition, but this year, Gwinnett wears the crown in terms of playing the state’s best football.

After Friday night’s quarterfinals action, Gwinnett teams had taken four games from opponents from South Georgia, including two out of three in Class 5A from programs in the esteemed Region 1. And, even more impressively, all three 5A Gwinnett squads were on the road against their South Georgia, Region 1 foes.

Despite South Georgia teams routinely taking home state titles throughout history in Georgia high school football, Gwinnett County has become a serious factor in all classifications on a yearly basis. While reaching the level of consistency over decades, as South Georgia has, Gwinnett is certainly at the forefront of Georgia high school football now. Read more >

Check out the latest edition of the Score 44!  In this week’s ranking of the top gridiron seniors in the state, there was just one change: Troy Braswell of Lowndes was replaced by Peach County’s Travis Richmond. The Vikings’ tough loss to Tift Co. did not help Troy.

PREP BEAT: Summaries of 11 Friday night games

North Clayton 20, Banneker 6: North Clayton (4-1) held on for a 20-6 win after leading 20-0 at the half against host Banneker (3-3). Adalius Matthews ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries for the Eagles. Michael Ross added 28 yards rushing to go along with three catches for 74 yards for North Clayton.

Westminster 27, Blessed Trinity 15: Westminster (3-2) got receiving touchdowns of 43 and 40 yards from Khamal Brown and a 2-yard rushing score from Ralph David Abernathy IV to defeat visiting Blessed Trinity (3-2). The Wildcats also blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone for a score. Spencer McManes had two rushing touchdowns (19 and 16 yards) for the Titans. Read more >

Demarco Robinson, a wide receiver at ML King, was named the Touchdown Club of Atlanta’s Back of the Week today at the club’s weekly meeting.He has caught 18 balls for 456 yards and seven touchdowns through three games thus far. Thusly, we have moved Demarco into the Score 44. Joining Demarcus in this week’s 44 is Quartterrio Morgan of Mt. Zion (Jonesboro).
