Thursday Roundup: Braves beat Fish, All Cobb in finals

Tommy Hanson did a little bit of everything last night in a Braves 7-3 win over the Florida Marlins. Hanson surrendered two runs in six innings and walked five batters but was on the hook when the Braves scored six runs in the seventh inning giving the Braves’ righty his fourth win of the year. Hanson also drove in a run with a sac fly in the fifth. Meanwhile, Yunel Escobar got the inning started in the seventh for the Braves, beating out an infield single. He would later score on a Martin Prado sac fly, then Chipper Jones earned an RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk.  Troy Glaus and Brian McCann each drove in runs with back-to-back RBI singles. Escobar picked up his second hit of the inning with another RBI single to drive home Glaus. Read more >

PREP BASEBALL PLAYOFFS: Lassiter sweeps Redan

After blowing a 4-0 lead, Lassiter broke a 4-4 tie with a seven-run sixth inning in Game 2 Monday. It was an inning to forget for Redan. The Trojans scored four runs on wild pitches and another on a hit-by-pitch. Only two of the seven runs in the inning came from run-scoring hits by the Trojans. Read more >

Thursday Roundup: Braves get win in 10, Collins Hill coach resigns

The Atlanta Braves did something last night that the team had not been doing recently: finding the clutch hit. Atlanta was finally able to find empty grass with base hits with runners in scoring position as the Braves outlasted the Washington Nationals 7-6 in ten innings. Omar Infante socked a two-run home run and the team received RBIs from Chipper Jones, Nate McLouth and Martin Prado to take a 6-4 lead into the eighth. Read more >

Cobb Beat, April 23-29: Warrior tennis grabs No. 2 seed; Trojan baseball on eight-game winning streak

The North Cobb men’s tennis team suffered a tough loss to Etowah last week, falling 3-2 in the Region 5, Class5A championships on April 14. The Warriors jumped out to a quick lead with both Hunter Reese and Evan Stack recording singles victories. Reese, the No. 1 singles player for the Warriors, made quick work of his competition, Garrison LeDuca, winning by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Meanwhile, Stack, the No. 3 player claimed victories of 6-1 and 6-3 over Sam Kinsman. Read more >

Cobb Beat: April 16-22

Spring is in the air, and with it, baseball fever is here.
Pope, last year’s Class 5A champion, dropped an 11-4 contest to Lassiter on Friday before falling to Harrison on Saturday by the score of 9-5. With the losses, Pope dropped their record to 11-5. The Greyhounds will look to get back on track when they take on Region opponents Walton, Centennial, and Wheeler this week. Read more >

In Region 5, Class 5A, Kennesaw Mountain faced off against Woodstock on March 19, eventually taking a 6-5 loss after Woodstock’s Zach Hitt knocked in the go-ahead run with a seventh inning double down the left field line. Read more >

Wednesday Roundup: Tech takes it to Tar Heels, Brookwood owns the pool

For the first time since 1995-96, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets swept the season series with UNC after Tech knocked off the Heels 68-51 last night. Freshman Derrick Favors netted 13 points in the win while Zach Peacock and Brian Oliver each finished with 12 for Tech. Gani Lawal grabbed 11 rebounds to go with his  nine points. Read more >

Today is the day that high school drama ends for football players across the country as players can officially send in Letters of Intent to their future schools. Florida is believed to have a slight lead on Texas in the overall “rankings” according to Scout.com and Rivals.com and on the local level, Georgia appears to be slipping a bit. Read more >

Friday Roundup: Thrashers in playoff position, Tech wipes Wake

A 19-4 run early in the second half and five blocked shots from freshman Derrick Favors was just the recipe Georgia Tech needed Thursday night to knock off Wake Forest 79-58. The No.22 Yellow Jackets got 16 points from DeAndre Bell and Gani Lawal added 14. Freshman Brian Oliver had 13 for Tech. Read more >

Wednesday Roundup: Hawks punish T-Wolves, Mason to be a Dawg

Despite foul trouble, the Atlanta Hawks proved they might be one of the top teams in all of the NBA with a 112-87 victory in Minnesota over the Timberwolves. Jamal Crawford scored 26 points, including 18 in the second half and was 3-4 from three-point range. The Hawks were without Josh Smith for most of the game due to foul trouble and had Randolph Morris and Zaza Pachulia both foul out of the game. Read more >

Monday Roundup: Falcons survive Jets, Tech falls to FSU

The Atlanta Falcons entered Sunday’s contest in the Meadowlands against the NFL’s toughest defense 6-7 and without a chance at the playoffs. Matt Ryan was scheduled to return from a toe injury that had kept him out of action for nearly three games and Michael Turner’s return to the running back spot would last just one carry. All of that would not matter though as Matt Ryan overcame a 5-17 first half to finish the game with a 6-yard TD to Tony Gonzalez on 4th-and-goal with under two minutes to go. Read more >
