PANTHER POWER: Parkview looking for a repeat

After a 21-5 regular season, including a 14-2 regional record, the Parkview baseball team hasn’t missed a beat in its quest for a second-consecutive Class AAAAA state championship. Coach Chan Brown and his team have already advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs after sweeps over Collins Hill and Tift County. Brown says that his team’s approach after winning the title last year hasn’t changed.

“It’s a whole new year, and we look to take the same approach game by game, pitch by pitch and inning by inning,” Brown said.

Reigning Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year and Vanderbilt commit Matt Olson has continued his torrid play during his senior season and is looking to add another championship ring to his already remarkable resume. During the 2011 season, Olson hit .460 with 17 home runs, 55 RBIs and a 1.060 slugging percentage. Read more >

PREPS: Parkview-Stephenson battle wins Comcast contest

Comcast challenged metro Atlanta high schools featured on episodes of “GHSA On Demand” to rally their community to watch their team’s episode. To make this contest a touchdown, the two schools featured in the episode would share a $1000 prize. The teams that scored the highest viewership this season were the Parkview Panthers and the Stephenson Jaguars. Read more >

South Georgia has the tradition, but this year, Gwinnett wears the crown in terms of playing the state’s best football.

After Friday night’s quarterfinals action, Gwinnett teams had taken four games from opponents from South Georgia, including two out of three in Class 5A from programs in the esteemed Region 1. And, even more impressively, all three 5A Gwinnett squads were on the road against their South Georgia, Region 1 foes.

Despite South Georgia teams routinely taking home state titles throughout history in Georgia high school football, Gwinnett County has become a serious factor in all classifications on a yearly basis. While reaching the level of consistency over decades, as South Georgia has, Gwinnett is certainly at the forefront of Georgia high school football now. Read more >

Dalton 21, Allatoona 17: Matt Cobb ran for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put Dalton (3-1) past visiting Allatoona (3-1) despite two rushing scores from Miles Jones. Dalton’s Robert Hardaway ran a blocked punt back for a score before the half to give the Catamounts a 14-10 lead. Tre Beck scored Dalton’s first touchdown of the night on a short run after his 70-yard gain put the ball on the Allatoona 5.

Kell 20, East Paulding 13: Host Kell (4-0) scored the game-winning touchdown with 35 seconds remaining when Brian Randolph ran for a 34-yard touchdown. East Paulding’s Kamanti Thomas scored on a 2-yard run with 1:09 left in the second quarter but the Raiders (3-1) missed the PAT. In the third, Sean Ashley ran in a 2-yard touchdown to give the Raiders a 13-6 lead. Read more >
