PREPS: Girls hoops rankings – Week 6

The craziness in Georgia girls basketball is settling down, just as region and state tournaments are about to commence. Last week, we saw three new teams ascend to the top spot of the AJC’s weekly poll. This week, all five of the No. 1’s remain in the pole position.

Three of the top teams are local schools. Norcross is tops in Class 5A, Chamblee is tops in Class 4A and Wesleyan is still the team to beat in Class A. Chamblee is undefeated this winter, while Norcross and Wesleyan have just two losses apiece. Read more >

PREPS: Boys hoops rankings – Week 3

Milton’s win over perennial national power Oak Hill (Va.) on Saturday was the talk of the national high school basketball scene. Oak Hill was ranked No. 1 in the nation prior to the game, but the loss has cleared a path for another Georgia team to potentially take the top ranking. Class 4A’s Miller Grove, who defeated Milton earlier in the season, has been Georgia’s top-ranked team in most national polls and now stands a shot at winning the national championship. Read more >

PREP BEAT: Nationals beat Americans in Cobb Senior Bowl

The high school football state championships took place last week, but that did mean the season was over. One the championship games conclude, all-star games take place in the metro Atlanta area and McEachern has been the host of the Cobb Senior Bowl the last three years.

In this year’s version, the players were divided into the National team and the American team. The National team featured players from Walton, Kell, Wheeler, Marietta and South Cobb. The American team features players from Allatoona, Lassiter, Pope, North Cobb, Sprayberry and Campbell. In the end, the Nationals were too much the Americans, winning 41-19 at Walter Cantrell Stadium on Saturday. Read more >

PREP BEAT: Summaries of 11 Friday night games

North Clayton 20, Banneker 6: North Clayton (4-1) held on for a 20-6 win after leading 20-0 at the half against host Banneker (3-3). Adalius Matthews ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries for the Eagles. Michael Ross added 28 yards rushing to go along with three catches for 74 yards for North Clayton.

Westminster 27, Blessed Trinity 15: Westminster (3-2) got receiving touchdowns of 43 and 40 yards from Khamal Brown and a 2-yard rushing score from Ralph David Abernathy IV to defeat visiting Blessed Trinity (3-2). The Wildcats also blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone for a score. Spencer McManes had two rushing touchdowns (19 and 16 yards) for the Titans. Read more >
