Atchison shines as football team splits region contests

During the past two weeks, the football team won a close game and lost a close game. Douglass (3-5) dropped a heartbreaker to Redan (2-5-1) on Oct. 17 by a score of 18-12. At the time, it was Redan’s only win of the season. The following Friday night, however, the Astros traveled to Newton and came away with a hard-fought 18-13 victory. Douglass will host the Luella Lions on Friday night at 8:15 p.m. Senior linebacker Jonathan Atchison has totaled over 80 tackles, including 15 tackles for loss and six sacks. The Auburn commitment is also seriously considering an offer from Alabama and is now starting to pick up interest from Florida as well, although the Gators have not yet offered as of press time. … The cross country team won the Atlanta Public Schools meet on Oct. 17. Jared Santifer won the overall title, while teammate Pertrez Watts finished second. For the girls team, Khaalidah Miller came in 10th place. The two teams will compete at the Region 2-AAAAA Championship meet on Saturday at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans followed by the GHSA Championships on Nov. 8.
