Atlanta Sports Awards announces finalists

Winners will be showcased at the 9th annual Atlanta Sports Awards gala

ATLANTA (February 26, 2014) – The Atlanta Sports Council announced today the finalists for five awards categories of the 2014 Atlanta Sports Awards. Previously announced winners who will be honored that night include Tommy Nobis, recipient of the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Coca-Cola and Matt Bryant, recipient of the 2014 Community Spirit Award presented by Georgia Power, A Southern Company.

The 2014 Atlanta Sports Award finalists are listed as follows:

Team of the Year presented by PrimeSport

Awarded to an Atlanta high school, collegiate or professional team whose dedication and work ethic resulted in a consistently high level of achievement or a championship.

• Atlanta Dream

• Norcross High School Football

• University of Georgia Women’s Swimming and Diving

Coach of the Year presented by The Home Depot

Awarded to an Atlanta high school, collegiate or professional coach whose dedication and commitment to coaching excellence is fostered in the lives of his/her athletes both on and off the field.

• Jack Bauerle – University of Georgia Women’s Swimming and Diving

• Fredi Gonzalez – Atlanta Braves

• Keith Maloof – Norcross High School Football

Professional Athlete of the Year presented by SunTrust Sports and Entertainment

Awarded to the Atlanta professional athlete who demonstrates superior physical ability in his/her sport.

• Al Horford – Atlanta Hawks

• Craig Kimbrel – Atlanta Braves

• Angel McCoughtry – Atlanta Dream

Collegiate Athlete of the Year presented by AT&T

Awarded to the Atlanta collegiate athlete who demonstrates superior physical ability in his/her sport.

• Kentavious Caldwell-Pope – University of Georgia Men’s Basketball

• Aaron Murray – University of Georgia Football

• Allison Schmitt – University of Georgia Women’s Swimming

High School Athlete of the Year presented by Kia

Awarded to the Atlanta prep athlete who demonstrates superior physical ability in his/her sport.

• Lorenzo Carter – Norcross High School Football

• Diamond DeShields – Norcross High School Girl’s Basketball

• Jimmy Yoder – Lassiter High School Boy’s Swimming

“For the ninth consecutive year we are honored to shine a spotlight on the standout athletes and teams here in Atlanta who have exhibited tremendous achievements in their respective sport,” said Dan Corso, executive director of the Atlanta Sports Council. “These talented men and women have shown not only dedication and commitment to their craft, but also to their communities, which has in turn sparked passion and loyalty from their audiences here in Atlanta and all throughout Georgia.”

The Atlanta Sports Awards will be held at the historic Fox Theatre’s Egyptian Ballroom on Wednesday, March 5, beginning with a red carpet entry and VIP reception at 6 p.m. In addition, the 9th annual awards gala will host a silent auction prior to the ceremony, which begins at 7 p.m.
