Atlanta Sports Awards celebrates its 10-year anniversary

At its 10th Anniversary Atlanta Sports Awards Thursday night, the Atlanta Sports Council recognized achievements from top performers among the professional, collegiate and high school ranks.

Former Braves pitcher and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Tom Glavine was honored as the recipient of the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Coca-Cola for his contributions on and off the field during his 21-year career.

Kennesaw State University’s baseball team earned two awards at this year’s ceremony, including the Team of the Year Award presented by PrimeSport. Former Owls catcher Max Pentecost was also selected as the Collegiate Athlete of the Year presented by AT&T. Pentecost is now a part of the Toronto Blue Jays organization, after being selected by the MLB team in the first round of the 2014 Draft.

For the second time in five years, Georgia Tech head football coach Paul Johnson was named Coach of the Year presented by The Home Depot after leading his Yellow Jackets to the ACC Championship game following the 2014 season. Georgia Tech’s in-state rival, the University of Georgia, also received some recognition: former Bulldogs wide receiver Chris Conley received the 2015 Community Spirit Award presented by Georgia Power, A Southern Company.

To round out the awards, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones was named Professional Athlete of the Year presented by SunTrust Sports & Entertainment, and former Sprayberry High School third baseman Michael Chavis received High School Athlete of the Year honors presented by Kia. Chavis was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft.

“For ten years now, we’ve had the honor of recognizing outstanding athletes, coaches and sports organizations throughout metro Atlanta,” said Dan Corso, executive director of the Atlanta Sports Council. “Tonight we were reminded how important sports are to our residents, our communities and our economy. We are so appreciative to all of the winners, finalists, nominees and guests who joined us here and continue to make a positive impact on our city and state.”
