Boys Basketball: Wheeler takes over No. 1 in AAAAAA

Wheeler’s lone loss came to West Linn (OR) over the holidays (70-62, Dec. 29) but the Wildcats have been on a tear inside state lines and take over No. 1 in Class AAAAAA with a 13-1 start to the season. Wheeler dominated region foe Milton 83-35 on Saturday and has now won its last four region games by at least 35 points, following a close 51-48 victory over Cherokee to start December. Shiloh dropped one spot to No. 2 and Tift County improved to No. 3 in Class AAAAAA with a 78-69 win over Lowndes on Saturday that moved the defending state champs to 15-0.

In Class AAAAA, Miller Grove swept its way through the Iolani Classic and Chick-Fil-A Classic over the holidays and remains at No. 1. Gainesville fell to No. 3 after dropping a game to rival Johnson. McIntosh used its winning streak at the Lake City Classic and a 68-63 victory at rival Whitewater on Saturday to remain undefeated and take over No. 2.

Johnson-Gainesville’s 76-63 win over Gainesville allowed the Knights jump Lithonia for No. 2 in Class AAAA and also to remain undefeated at 13-0. Burke County debuted in Class AAA at No. 8 and Sandy Creek dropped out of the top 10.

In Class AAA, Jenkins improved two spots to No. 3 and Westminster replaced Peach County at No. 10 after the Trojans lost consecutive games (Rutland 83-79, Perry 50-47) to start the New Year.

Pace Academy remains No. 1 in a wide-open Class AA field and Holy Innocents’ jumped two spots to No. 2 while Thomasville used a leap from No. 7 to crack the top 3 for the first time this season.

In Class A, Wilkinson County slid to No. 7 and Greenforest took over No. 2. Turner County replaced Randolph-Clay at No. 10.
