After losing former head coach Pierre Coffey this week to Stewart County, Carver-Columbus has hired head coach Jarvis Jones to take over the program. Jones starred at Carver-Columbus, where he was a former four-star recruit, an all-state basketball player and played in the prestigious US Army All-American game.
He was coached by former head coach Dell McGee, who led Carver-Columbus to its first-ever state championship in 2007, and now he assumes the same role.
Jones went on to star at Georgia, where he finished his collegiate career with 168 tackles, 47 tackles for loss, 28 sacks and nine forced fumbles. He shone bright with the Bulldogs and had an incredible season in 2012, finishing with 84 tackles and 14.5 sacks. Jones was a two-time All-American, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, and Jack Lambert Trophy winner.
He played in the NFL after a productive career with the Bulldogs, where he spent five NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. Injuries derailed his NFL career, but never his love for the game. After playing, he found a job with his alma mater. Before coming to the Tigers, Jones was an assistant outside linebacker coach for Georgia for five seasons.
The Carver-Columbus program has enjoyed a lot of success in recent years and won its second state championship in program history in 2024 under coach Coffey. This season, they return a plethora of talent and should be right back in title contention with coach Jones at the helm. He will bring tenacity, focus, grit, and hard work to the Tigers. All the qualities he was known for as a player.
