Camden County trying for another wrestling championship; GHSA Team Duals Championship updates from Friday

Camden County’s path to the program’s 22nd overall GHSA wrestling championship and the program’s 12th team duals championship got a little easier after the Wildcats outlasted two rounds of the winner’s bracket as the GHSA team duals championships got underway Friday.

Camden, which has won the past 10 team duals championships, beat East Coweta 80-0 in the first round of the Class 6A bracket and upended Mill Creek 53-22 in the quarterfinals.

Against West Mill Creek, Camden got victories from 10 wrestlers – Elijah Hattaway (113 pounds), Isaac Santos (120), Brandon Higgins (132), Roderick Zow (144), Waylon Rozier (150), Brock Weaver (157), Jamaal Coppedge (165), Brian Wright (190), Ryder Wilder (215) and Joseph Schulze (285).

The Wildcats will take on West Forsyth for a shot at the championship bout after the Wolverines moved past Rockdale County and North Gwinnett.

In Class 5A, two-time defending Class 6A champion South Effingham moved past Habersham Central and Alexander and is one victory away from the championship match. Creekview stands in South Effingham’s way after beating Gainesville and Coffee in the first two rounds.

After moving past Cambridge and Locust Grove, sitting Class 5A champion Cass will face the current two-time Class 4A champion Central-Carroll for a chance at a championship berth. Central-Carroll defeated Lithonia and Perry to earn the semifinals berth.

In Class 3A, Jefferson is still alive and has a chance for the program’s 45th overall wrestling championship and the current 3A champion, Lumpkin County, stands in the Dragons’ way. Jefferson defeated Dougherty and Heritage-Catoosa to earn the semis berth while Lumpkin County moved past Upson-Lee and Harlem to stay alive.

Rockmart has won three-consecutive championships and after beating Columbia and Morgan County, the Yellow Jackets will face Cook for a championship berth. Cook defeated East Jackson and Coahulla Creek in the first two rounds. On the other side of the bracket, Lovett will face Columbus to earn a title berth.

Sitting Class A champion Social Circle moved past McIntosh County Academy and Dublin to earn a semifinals berth against four-time champion Trion, after it moved past Elbert County and Mount Pisgah.
