Class 6A Blog: Baseball and soccer kickoff first round action; Newton baseball earns home series

Grayson, West Forsyth, North Gwinnett and Buford secured region titles during the final week of the regular season and join the likes of Lowndes, East Coweta, Hillgrove and Etowah after those four teams had top seeds secured prior to the final week of regular season play. In addition to the crowning of region champions, the last week proved to be critical for several teams that earned their way into the playoffs. In Region 6, West Forsyth was in control of its own destiny and could clinch the top seed with its two games this week against Forsyth Central—which currently sits at No. 2 in the region. Additionally, Denmark, North Atlanta and South Forsyth were all three at eight losses heading into this past week week. Denmark lost a 9-2 game to last-place Alpharetta and had two games against the Raiders to regain its footing in the playoff race. Denmark previously lost 2-of-3 to West Forsyth and South Forsyth, but won the head-to-head with Forsyth Central. North Atlanta has two games left against South Forsyth and was able to win Game 1 9-8.

The results of that busy final week in Region 6 saw West Forsyth close out the region title and Denmark earning the No. 2 seed ahead of North Atlanta and Forsyth Central. South Forsyth—which also finished with a 12-9 region record missed out on the playoffs. In Region 7, North Gwinnett clinched the top seed and Region 8 saw Mountain View climb up to No. 3. The other big result came in Region 4 where Newton climbed its way to the No. 2 seed after Archer dropped its series to Grayson. Newton defeated Archer 7-5 in the first meeting and then won 13-3 before a 2-0 loss to take that critical series 2-1. After that Game 3 loss, the Rams defeated Mount Vernon 7-0 and then swept South Gwinnett 16-0, 15-0 and 10-3 to close out the year on a four-game win-streak. As a result, Newton will now host McEachern in the first round, while Archer will visit No. 2 seed Harrison out of Region 3.

Listed below are the First Round pairings for this week’s girls and boys soccer and baseball matchups.
