Region tournaments have taken center stage statewide and Class 6A will conclude the action throughout this week and set the seeding for the upcoming state playoffs. Today’s blog will provide all eight region schedules and will provide a guideline for what regions will crown champions first. As of Tuesday, Feb. 11 the only region tournament yet to tipoff is on the boys side in Region 1. The girls started on Monday with a double-header at Camden County and that slate saw No. 4 seed Colquitt County (56-47) defeat No. 5 Tift County and No. 3 seeded Richmond Hill top No. 6 Valdosta 46-35. The action will resume on Wednesday for the semifinals and the third-place game and championship will tipoff on Friday. The boys will open the Region 1 tournament at Valdosta tonight with No. 5 Richmond Hill vs. No. 4 Colquitt County and No. 6 Camden County vs. No. 3 Lowndes. Similarly, to the girls side where Tift County and Valdosta were defeated, the two losing teams in tonight’s Region 1 double header will be eliminated from the playoff hunt while the winners will advance to the semifinals to take on the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded teams. Region 8 was the first Class 6A region to start last Thursday, Regions 6 and 7 got started on Friday, Region 2, Region 4 and Region 5 opened this past Saturday and Region 3 started on Monday. As for the championship dates, they go as follows; Region 7 and Region 8 will have the first champions crowned on Wednesday. Thursday will crown Region 6 and Region 3. On Friday, Region 5, Region 3 and the Region 1 girls will play their championship and third-place games. The final playoff seeds will be set on Saturday with the Region 1 boys and then Region 4.
Around the Class boys: In Region 2, Carrollton kept its season alive with a 59-53 win over Douglas County on Saturday and advanced to take on No. 1 seed Westlake Tuesday night. …On Monday, Hillgrove held off Osborne 62-60 and Harrison defeated Paulding County 61-60 to both keep their season alive in Region 3. Due to the eight-team size of Region 3, both the Hawks (vs. South Cobb) and Hoyas (vs. Campbell) will have to win again Tuesday night to secure a playoff berth, while No. 7 seed Paulding County and No. 8 seed Osborne were both eliminated with the narrow defeats. Region 4 opened on Saturday with Rockdale County defeating Heritage-Conyers and setting up a showdown with No. 3 seed Grovetown on Tuesday. North Paulding topped Marietta 62-57 on Saturday and will take on Etowah Tuesday night with a playoff berth on the line. In Region 6, Lambert, North Atlanta, North Forsyth and West Forsyth have all guaranteed playoff berths and will play in the semifinals Tuesday night. Region 7’s playoff teams are set and the championship will be No. 1 seed Norcross versus No. 3 Peachtree Ridge, while Meadowcreek and Duluth battle for the third and fourth seeds.
Around the Class girls: Colquitt County and Richmond Hill secured playoff berths out of Region 1 on Monday. …In Region 2, Westlake, East Coweta, Carrollton and Chapel Hill have punched their tickes to the playoffs. Region 3 still has playoff berths on the line with McEachern facing Harrison and Paulding County taking on Osborne Tuesday night—the winners will take on Campbell and Hillgrove, which have already earned spots in the semifinals as the top two seeds. In Region 4, South Gwinnett and Grovetown and Rockdale and Archer will be playing for an opportunity to secure playoff berths and advance to the semifinals. Region 5, will have Etowah versus Walton and Marietta versus Wheeler playing for the right to advance to the semifinals and secure playoff berths. In Region 6, North Forsyth, Denmark, Lambert and South Forsyth have already guaranteed playoff spots, Norcross and Brookwood will battle for the Region 7 title and Buford will take on Mill Creek for the Region 8 title after Mill Creek was able to topple No. 2 seeded Collins Hill 43-41 on Monday. Collins Hill will now take on Central Gwinnett on Wednesday in the third-place consoloation finals.
