The GHSA baseball and soccer state playoffs will continue Tuesday and Wednesday with the Sweet Sixteen and there are 23 of the 24 No. 1 seeds still alive in the brackets. In baseball, all eight top seeds advanced in the first round with Lowndes and East Coweta each needing a Game 3 victory to clinch their respective series. Lowndes—the two-time defending Class 7A state champions battled with fourth-seeded Cherokee and after taking Game 1 2-1 had to rebound from a 6-3 loss with a 2-1 Game 3 victory. East Coweta took its opening game against Dacula 9-7, but then had to bounce back from a 9-1 defeat and advanced with a 4-1 series-clinching victory. East Coweta will now host Walton in the second round, while Lowndes will host Mill Creek.
Below the Mill Creek and Lowndes matchup in the top left quadrant of the bracket, No. 3 seed Brookwood will travel to No. 1 seeded Grayson. This is a rematch of last year’s semifinals that Grayson won in three games. The Rams took the first game 3-2 and then fell 4-0 before clinching the series with a 4-3 victory. In the bottom left quadrant, Carrollton will travel to No. 1 ranked Etowah after its three-game victory over Mountain View in the first round. Carrollton clinched the series with a 3-1 Game 3 victory, while Etowah swept Richmond Hill 6-5 and 7-2. On the bottom left, Region 3 champion Hillgrove will host Parkview after both teams swept in the first round. The winner of Harrison and West Forsyth will matchup with the winner of Walton’s trip to East Coweta. In the bottom right quadrant of the bracket, No. 3 seed McEachern will visit top-seeded North Gwinnett. The winner of that series will take on the winner of North Paulding and Buford.
In boys soccer, top-seeded Richmond Hill, Grayson, Etowah, Pebblebrook, Lambert, Duluth and Collins Hill advanced and the only No. 4 that survived the first round was Discovery—which defeated Carrollton 3-1. Discovery will now travel to No. 2 seed Marietta after the Blue Devils scored a 7-1 home win over No. 3 seed Lowndes. Richmond Hill will host Dacula and take on the winner of Grayson and visiting Meadowcreek. Etowah will host No. 3 seed Mill Creek and await the winner of Norcross and Pebblebrook. Lambert hosts Campbell after the Spartans’ 3-2 thriller over Heritage-Conyers and awaits the Discovery vs. Marietta result. In the bottom right quadrant, Duluth hosts Harrison and Collins Hill hosts Walton after the Raiders edged host Camden County 1-0 in the first round.
The top seeds have an opportunity to sweep their way into the Elite Eight on the girls side with Richmond Hill, South Gwinnett, Walton, Harrison, West Forsyth, East Coweta, Brookwood and Buford all hosting as top seeds during Tuesday’s second round action. Richmond Hill will host Mill Creek and Lambert travels to South Gwinnett. On the bottom left quadrant, Walton faces visiting Mountain View and North Gwinnett travels to Harrison. West Forsyth will face a Hillgrove team that topped Archer 9-0 and East Coweta will take on North Paulding after the No. 2 seeded Wolfpack defeated Lowndes 10-0 in the first round. The bottom right quadrant features Campbell at No. 1 seeded Brookwood and No. 3 seeded Cherokee at No. 1 seed Buford.
