Class A Div. I Blog: Gordon Lee baseball advances past ACE Charter in second round, will face Washington County

The second round of the GHSA Baseball playoffs went underway on Thursday as the top team in Class A-Division I, the Gordon Lee Trojans, advanced to the quarterfinals after taking down ACE Charter.

Gordon Lee took down ACE Charter 7-1 in the first game followed by a 7-2 score in the second, sweeping the Gryphon in just two games.

Though the first game of the series was delayed by 20 minutes, the Trojans regrouped and were able to handle business in game one as Gordon Lee pitcher Aiden Goodwin struck out 11 batters in the first game of the series.

“I thought the kids played hard,” said Gordon Lee head baseball coach Mike Dunfee. “The kids were out here on the field at two o’clock and didn’t leave here until 11 And it was a mental grind and I think they handled it very well.

The bats were hot for the Trojans in game one as junior Peyton Groce went two-for-three from the plate with two RBIs along with Garrett Ross driving in a run of his own along with recording two hits in the game.

The Trojans would eventually take game one, 7-1 as Maddox Millard, Jackson Scali and JR Zeimet contributed with one RBI each of their own to take down ACE Charter.

Game two was more of the same for the Trojans as the bats stayed hot against the Gryphons. Zeimet’s two-run home run was instrumental in giving the Trojans the victory as Millard was effective at the plate and on the mound for the Trojans.

Millard struck out six hitters on the mound while also going two-for-four with an RBI at the plate.

During the regular season, Gordon Lee held one of the best records in the state as they went 34-2 and 20-1 in the region, finishing first ahead of Fannin County and Christian Heritage. The Trojans went on a 24-game win-streak before losing their first game of the season to Gordon Central back in mid-April.

With its second round victory over ACE Charter, Gordon Lee will now face Washington County at home in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 7.
