Class A Div. II Blog: Claxton girls win first-ever Track state championship

Today’s Class A Div. II blog will breakdown the results of the track and field state championships from this past weekend. The boys proved to be incredibly close as Mitchell County prevailed with a 54-52 two-point victory over Warren County to capture the state title. On the girls side, Claxton tallied a larger cushion and defeated runner-up Elite Scholars Academy 74-52. Mitchell County won its second-straight boys state title and third all-time (1957) and Claxton became a first-ever state champion.

Claxton was led to victory by junior Hannah Hendrix—who placed first in the Pole Vault and Discus. Senior teammate Jada Jordan finished first in the Discus and Shotput. On the boys side, Mitchell County took first place in the 4×800 relays. Bowdon sophomore Averi Lowen swept the 1600 and 3200 meter races and also placed second in the 800 meter.

The baseball state championships will take center stage next Tuesday with Lanier County and Wilcox County will open with its double-header on Tuesday. Top-ranked Lanier County swept Bowdon in the semifinals and Wilcox County is coming off a 7-3 Game 3 victory over ECI this past Thursday.

AROUND THE CLASS BOYS: Lake Oconee Academy took home the Class A Div. II title with a 3-1 overtime victory against Atkinson County. Leonardo Inostrosa scored the equalizing goal in regulation, forcing the overtime period. He added the go-ahead goal at 4:58 in overtime which set up Palmer Larkin’s game-winner with 7:15 left in the second overtime.

Entering the championship, neither Lake Oconee Academy nor Atkinson County had ever won a championship. Alex Vega scored with 5:53 left in the first half to give Atkinson County the 1-0 lead before Inostrosa’s heroics.

AROUND THE CLASS GIRLS: Atlanta Classical defeated Lake Oconee Academy 2-1 in the Class A Div. II soccer playoffs. Two goals from Leighton Maynard within 1:30 of each in the second half proved too much for Lake Oconee Academy. Victoria Goubran scored at the 25:28 mark of the second half to cut into the deficit but the match was out of reach.

Maynard was named the Wendy’s Most Valuable Player for her efforts in bringing Atlanta Classical its second championship after winning the Class A-Public title in 2021. Lake Oconee Academy was trying to win its first-ever title.
