The Lanier County Bulldogs won their first-ever baseball state title last season and will look to repeat this year in a wide-open Class A Div. II field. The Bulldogs will open this season on Feb. 11 against Newberry (FL) before travelling to Berrien and Fitzgerald for their first in-state contests. Last year, Lanier County clinched the state title with a 3-2 victory over Charlton County in Game 3 of the championship series. Lanier County was 0-4 against Charlton County during the regular season, but won 8-7 to force a game 3 and make history as a program. These two Area 2 rivals will open their Area schedules on Feb. 25-28 in a rematch of last year’s finals.
The Track and Field Season will start in late February and the biggest indicators to what teams will be contending this year will be the impacts of reclassification and then what we saw in the cross country season. On the boys side, Georgia Military defeated Atlanta Classical and Furlow Charter for the state title and Atlanta Classical finished first on the girls side with a wide margin—scoring 36 points to second-place Furlow Charter’s 96 points. Those programs excelled in the distance events, but in the case of GMC, they will need more success in the short distance, jumps and field events after earning a third-place finish last year in track and field. Mitchell County (77) and Warren County (60) earned first and second last year and will be back in Class A Div. II as major contenders. On the girls side, Charlton County is the defending state champ—topping Montgomery County with a narrow 59-50 margin.
Notes:
BOYS: The 2024-25 Wrestling Duals State Championship crowned Social Circle the state champion in the Class A bracket. Wrestling is one of the only sports that does not have a split Class A and the Redskins are a Class A Div. I school. Runner-up Toombs County is also in Class A Div. I and finished runner-up to Social Circle. Trion fell to Social Circle in the winner’s bracket and then dropped a 51-27 loss to Bremen in the consolation finals to finish fourth place. As a result, Trion was the furthest advancing Class A Div. II-based school in this year’s Class A wrestling duals and will get another chance to make a run when the traditional meet rolls out next month.
GIRLS: The top 10 teams have been busy with some M.L.K. Day games slated along with a busy Tuesday slate. The most impactful matchup was last Friday with No. 3 ranked Wilcox County hosting No. 4 Telfair County. Wilcox County (14-1) is 6-0 in Region 4 now and has won 13-straight games. The Patriots dominated Telfair County 70-26 and followed it up with a 49-37 win at Hawkinsville. The Patriots’ only loss came back on Dec. 7 to Class 5A’s Lee County (56-50)—resulting in a flawless record within Class A Div. II so far for the program. The teams still have to cross paths again in February for a regular season finale on Feb. 7 that will be at Telfair County. On M.L.K. Day, No. 1-ranked Taylor County dropped a 58-47 loss to St. Anne-Pacelli—a GISA program that is 12-2 this season. Taylor County is back in action Friday night and will visit Crawford County.
