The biggest winners of the first round of the baseball state playoffs were Region 1 and Region 2. Region 1 completed the classification’s only sweep—sending Baconton Charter, Miller County, Seminole County and Pelham into the second round. Region 2 nearly completed a first-round sweep against its four Region 8 opponents. No. 1 seed Lanier County swiftly defeated Washington-Wilkes 6-0 and 10-0 in the first round. No. 2 seed Charlton County dominated Lincoln County 11-1 and 15-2 and then No. 3 seed Irwin County went on the road and served Towns County a 13-0, 6-5 sweep. Fourth-seeded Clinch County matched up with Region 8 champion and No. 1 seed Lake Oconee Academy in the first round and nearly came away with the victory. After falling 1-0 in Game 1, Clinch County scored a 7-4 victory in Game 2 before falling in a 3-2 heartbreaker in Game 3. As a result, Clinch County out-scored Lake Oconee Academy 9-8 in the only series that didn’t go in the favor of Region 8.
The second round matchups are incredibly intriguing and No. 2 ranked Baconton Charter will be hosting No. 4 ranked Irwin County while carrying a 20-game win-streak into the series. Baconton Charter is 29-1 on the season with its only loss coming in a 5-3 game to Valwood. Schley County will travel to Wilcox County after its clinch 9-2 Game 3 victory over Mt. Zion-Carroll. At the bottom left quadrant, Region 2’s runner-up Charlton County—which is ranked No. 3 overall behind Lanier County and Baconton Charter will host Pelham—the only No. 4 seed that advanced to the second round. No. 5 ranked ECI awaits the winner of Trion and Taylor County. On the right side of the bracket, opponents Metter and Crawford County will square off. Crawford County outscored Manchester 35-0 in the first round and Metter defeated Wheeler County by a combined 25-5 giving these two juggernauts a 60-5 scoring advantage heading into their series next week. No. 1 ranked Lanier County and its opponent Seminole County were both able to shutout their first round opponents with Laneir County sweeping Washington-Wilkes 6-0 and 10-0 and Seminole County handling GSIC 4-0 in both games. The bottom right quadrant of the bracket will stage Screven County at Region 7 champion Bowdon and then Miller County at Lake Oconee Academy. Both Screven County and Lake Oconee Academy are coming off Game 3 victories, while Bowdon and Miller County swept their opening round opponents with a 22-2 and 30-6 scoring advantage—respectfully.
Around the Class Boys: The second round of the soccer playoffs will take place on Wednesday, April 30. In the first round, Montgomery County, Atlanta Classical, Chattahoochee County, Towns County, Dooly County, Claxton, Georgia Military and Brooks County each advanced with victories, while Trion, Washington-Wilkes, Lake Oconee Academy, Mt. Zion-Carroll, Metter, Irwin County, Atkinson County and Bryan County moved on after observing first-round byes
Around the Class Girls: Bryan County, Irwin County, Lanier County, Screven County, Mt. Zion-Carroll, Lake Oconee Academy, Greene County and Trion were the eight teams in the soccer state playoffs that observed first-round byes and each of those teams will be squaring off in the second round with Bryan County facing Irwin County. As for the teams that earned victories in the first round, Hawkinsville advanced past Chattahoochee County in PK’s—winning 2(3)-2(0) and will visit Elite Scholars Academy—which defeated Lincoln County 3-0 in the previous round. Region 4 champion Crawford County defeated Treutlen 2-1 and will host Atlanta Classical. Dooly County topped Southwest Georgia STEM 1-0 and will travel to Portal in the second round Finally, Georgia Military defeated Macon County 10-0 and will host Claxton after its 1-0 road win over Atkinson County
