Gordon Lee brought home the schools fifth GHSA baseball state championship on Monday as the Trojans swept Pepperell beating them twice in a three game series, 5-2 in game on followed by a 7-6 victory in game two earning them the state championship.
This was the first time the Trojans have taken home the GHSA state championship since 2019 when Gordon Lee won back-to-back baseball championships in 2018 and 2019. Along with the repeat championship six seasons ago, the Trojans won two more state titles prior in 1984 and 1979.
“It was an awesome ride,” said Gordon Lee head baseball coach, Mike Dunfee after winning his third GHSA baseball state championship with the school. “The players came together and made the vision from the beginning a reality. They didn’t flinch. They are the toughest, grittiest players I have ever coached.”
In game one, Gordon Lee jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first two innings as junior Peyton Groce hit an RBI-single in the first inning followed by a Brady Little double to right field in the bottom of the second inning to stack two early runs against the Dragons in game one. Pepperell was able to answer with two runs of its own in the fourth inning before the Trojans added two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to Little’s second RBI-single of the game, bringing home two runs to regain the lead.
Gordon Lee added to its lead in the sixth with a Garrett Ross double into right field, bringing home the final run of game one as the Trojans won 5-2.
In the second game of the night, Pepperell found themselves with a 2-1 lead at the end of the second inning thanks to a pair of RBI-singles from the Dragons.
The bats came alive for the Trojans in the fourth and fifth inning as they totaled six runs in two innings to come from behind and take the lead.
In the fourth, Dustin Day’s RBI-single brought home a run for the Trojans before a passed ball brought Day back home as well as Gordon Lee took a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
In the fifth, Ross’ RBI-single into centerfield allowed two runners to get home due to an error in centerfield by Pepperell. Two batters later with Day back up to the plate, he was hit by a pitch, bringing home another run. Maddox Millard rounded out the scoring for Gordon Lee in the fifth with a sacrifice-flyout to left field bringing home another run for the Trojans extending its lead to 7-2.
Pepperell wouldn’t go down without a fight, scoring four runs of its own over the fifth and the sixth inning to stay within striking distance.
Ultimately, the Dragons left the tying run on base in the seventh inning as Millard earned the win for Gordon Lee, bringing home the school’s fourth baseball title and it’s third in the last six seasons.
