Sacramento State is one of the hottest programs currently in college athletics. The Hornets have recently landed pro basketball hall of famer Shaquille O’Neal, former five-star Mikey Williams, and former four-star QB Jaden Rashada. Over the weekend, they landed Creekside standout WR Damien Henderson. Henderson details why he became a Hornet.
“Sacramento State welcomed me with open arms and has always shown me love from the start. The coaching staff constantly kept in contact with me and even made their way to speak with my family, which means a lot to me. It really shows how much they value that foundation,” said Henderson.

Another key factor in his recruitment was the relationship he built with the coaching staff at the program. The relationship with the WR coach, Lem Adams.
“The WR coach, Lem Adams, has been in consistent contact with me and is always showing me love. It stands out that he is the coach who took a chance on me too, showing how much he’s dedicated to my recruitment,” said Henderson.
Henderson has scheduled a visit to Sacramento State on June 20th to visit the campus and get an official look.
“I have a scheduled one coming up on June 20th, so stay tuned on that. Once I take that visit I’ll have plenty to rave on about the school. I’ll have more on that coming soon,” said Henderson.
His story starts at a young age when he learned team accomplishments over individual ones and resilience. Those qualities allowed him to get to the level he is today, which makes him a true gem for college coaches at the next level.
“Since a young age, this sport showed me that I had resiliency, being a team player, always attack the ball no matter how or what and come down with it, the will to never stop in the face of adversity, and I always earn my keep no matter the circumstances.”
This past season with Creekside Henderson finished with 47 catches for 596 yards and three touchdowns. He had a breakout game against Mays High School, finishing with eight catches for 113 yards. Henderson is probably one of the most underrated wide receivers in this class. His route-running ability sets him apart. He can separate easily from defenders at the top of the route, and is great at getting into the sight line of his quarterback when the play breaks down. He plays bigger than his size at 5’10 and can go up and catch the ball while taking a big hit.
This offseason, he has been continuing to improve his craft, and Henderson is currently in spring practice and has been taking on a new role with the team.
“Spring practice has been great, and I’ve taken on a new role of being a team leader/captain. This off-season, my main focus has been speed through routes, route technique, and coverage recognition. I am extremely excited, plus it’s my last high school spring game, so I want to see what my team does against Thomas County Central,” said Henderson.
Head coach Maurice Dixon has also been a huge factor for Henderson in his continued improvement, not only as a player but as a person off the field. Coach Dixon runs a tight-knit program that has been on the doorstep of winning a state championship and not only wins at a high level but also develops high-character men.
“Under coach Dixon, I’ve learned to be selfless, coachable, and a dependable teammate and player whenever my number is called to step up,” he said.
Henderson checks a lot of boxes for teams at the next level. Sacramento State was one that gave him a viable opportunity to prove himself and showcase what he could do at the collegiate level. He is thankful and is ready to work hard to achieve his dreams. His commitment was just the beginning of the story.
