The GHSA State Golf Championship fields have been set for the season finales at 11 locations across Georgia in the state’s longest golfing days Monday and Tuesday. Area and sectional results seeded the championship fields and set up a two-day schedule with some of the best golfers in the state ready for the links.
WHEN AND WHERE?
The Class 6A season will end at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta with Lowndes as the hosting school. The low country courses of Pine Lakes at Jekyll Island (boys) and Seas Island Retreat Golf Course (girls) will welcome the Class 5A programs. Governors Towne Club (boys) and Bentwater Golf Club (girls) will host the Class 4A championships. Both the Class 3A boys and girls will travel to Highland Country Club in LaGrange to compete for the championship.
The Class 2A boys and girls will travel to Columbus and play on Bull Creek’s East Course (boys) and Maple Ridge Golf Club (girls). Arrowhead Pointe Golf Club in Elberton will host both the Class A Division I boys and girls. Bartram Trail in Evans will welcome the Class A Division II boys and girls. Twin City Country Club in Tennille will play host to the boys and girls of the Class 1A-3A Private championship.
A NEW HOPE
There’s a new-look group of classifications after the addition of Class 1A-3A Private, which removed the overly dominant private schools from playing against the public golf teams and placed them into their own playoffs from the lower 1A-3A classes.
ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?
The defending champion boys teams are Milton (formerly 7A), which has won the past four titles in the state’s highest class. Lakeside-Evans (6A) won the program’s fifth championship last season. Northgate (5A) captured its first-ever championship last season. North Oconee (4A) has won three of the past four seasons in Class 4A and has five overall titles. Wesleyan (3A) won the past two Class 3A titles, its only championships, but will face a stiffer field this season. Same with Mount Paran, which was formerly 2A and now will compete against the 1A-3A Private teams like Mount Vernon, which was formerly A Division I, now 1A-3A Private and Christian Heritage which was formerly Division II and now 1A-3A Private.
On the girls side, since 2013, Lambert has won 10 titles and only missed out in 2018, when North Gwinnett won, and 2020, when the pandemic cancelled the season. The Longhorns enter the title match having won every title since 2019, sans 2020. Johns Creek won last year’s Class 6A title and McIntosh won the 5A crown. North Oconee has won the past four titles in Class 4A and enters as a favorite. Savannah Christian won the past two Class 3A titles but now competes in Class 1A-3A Private. Pierce County is the two-time Class 2A defending champion. In Class A Division I, Prince Avenue won the title last year and now competes in Class 1A-3A Private alongside the six-time defending champion Lake Oconee Academy, which won the Class A-Public titles from 2018-2022 and the Class A Division II title in the past two seasons.
