ELITE JUNIOR: Ian Shannon

Ian Shannon is punting and kicking for Marietta High School this year and has been putting on a clinic. His average punt this year has traveled 40 yards, which is a better average than nearly half of the schools in D-I college football right now. He is also the Vikings kicker, converting 9-of-11 field goals this season which ties a MHS record for most made in a season. In addition, his touchback percent on kickoffs is 91 percent and his longest punt traveled 64 yards in the air.

So Ian is a great football player. That much is obvious when you see the kind of power he has when kicking the football. What is not as obvious is what the standout has been able to accomplish off the field. He has worked hard for his academic achievements and has actively participated as a member of the Marietta Environmental Club for the past two years. Ian is also a starter for Marietta’s soccer team. He has been a starter for both his freshman and sophomore year, and plans to play the next two years as well.

Schools are noticing his abilities as he has already gotten multiple letters requesting he visit their campus.

“I’m going to visit Auburn for the Georgia-Auburn game, and I’m also planning on going to visit Kent, Duke and UGA,” said Shannon, “I’ve been getting a lot of letters from UGA after they came to one of our games.”

When college recruits come to watch your game, you hope to play well. It’s wishful thinking to expect letters from an institution right after they watch you play, but that’s exactly what happened in Ian’s case.

Ian is also participating in youth football leagues in his area. He loves the game of football and would do anything in his power to help the game.

“I usually get involved with the youth football league whenever I can. I work a lot, but I try to referee whenever I’m not working,” Ian says.

His love for the game and his work ethic has translated directly to a successful playing career in high school, and he should continue to see success wherever he decides to play at the next level.
