Just months after the forced resignation of Barrett Davis amid a misconduct investigation, Lee Hutto, former Westside coach, has been announced as the Evans football program’s new leader.
The state champion head coach brings 28 years of teaching and coaching experience to the Knights along with 24 playoff appearances and eight region championships. In his four years at Westside, Hutto finished with a 23-20 record and two playoff appearances in 2021 and 2024.
Prior to his time at Westside, Hutto held coaching positions at Warren County and Washington-Wilkes with a record of 31-28 between the two schools and a Region 7-A championship for the Warren County Screaming Devils. In total, he holds a 54-48 record since 2006. Evans High School has expressed its excitement for the new head coach via a Facebook post and “look forward to the upcoming football season under his leadership.”
Coach Hutto had nothing but kind things to say about the leadership at Evans from the superintendent down to the principle and athletic director. Hutto’s main focus is bringing that same attention to detail and work ethic he instilled in the players over at Westside. Aside from being a football coach, Hutto is a man of faith. His goals aren’t just to put together a strong football team and get wins but also to mold young men into men of character with Christian values at the center of it all.
“We’re going to take every day and share Jesus with these kids and make football a ministry and pour the gospel into them,” he said.
As a coach, Hutto is all about being physically tough and mentally tough, but as a man of God he believes there is nothing more important than being “spiritually tough.”
The reality of any coaching change is they require patience and dedication to the process. Hutto describes it as “drinking water out of a fire hydrant.” While Evans is in the process of building new facilities equipped with a second gym, a multipurpose room, and a weight room, Hutto prepares to step into his new role as coach and mentor this group of promising young men.
