Exceptional matchups headline GHSA baseball championship slate

The 2025 GHSA Baseball State Championships will crown eight state champions, featuring eight thrilling series spread across three premiere ball parks. Coolray Field will host the Class 5A, 6A and 4A state finals, Rome’s AdventHealth Stadium will crown the Class 3A, 2A and A Div. I state champs and Georgia Southern University’s JI Clements Stadium will host the Class A Division II and the newly-formed Class A-3A Private finals series. In Class 6A, Lowndes has returned to the championship stage with a golden opportunity to win a third-consecutive state title and fifth all-time championship. The Vikings booked their ticket back to the finals with a (4-3, 4-1) sweep over Region 5 champion and No. 1 ranked Etowah in the semifinals. Lowndes had already opened the playoffs with a 2-1 series win over Region 5’s No. 4 seed Cherokee and now the Vikings will meet with the No. 2 seed from Region 5 with Walton. The Raiders sit one series away from its first state title since 2016 and what would result in the program’s fourth all-time state title. Walton has won three-straight road playoff series—defeating East Coweta, Harrison and North Gwinnett, while Lowndes has been at home for each of the last four rounds. Class 5A has an intriguing battle between Houston County and Newnan. Houston County seeks a fifth state title since 2014 when the program won its first-ever crown and Newnan is looking to collect its third all-time state title and first since its 1991 title; the Cougars also captured a state title in 1951.

BACK AT IT

Cartersville posted a runner-up finish in Class 5A last year and has returned to the finals this year in Class 4A with another opportunity to win the program’s seventh all-time state title. The Purple Hurricanes will be facing Blessed Trinity—which is seeking its fourth all-time state championship and first since 2015. Both of these finalists survived three-game series in the quarterfinals before sweeping their semifinal opponents and will be meeting for the first time since 2022 when the teams occupied the same Region 7-5A. Cartersville’s Class of 2025 seniors carry with them the distinction of being the winningest class in the history of Hurricane baseball with a career regular season record of 96-20. The Titans and Canes have split their last six matchups with the home team winning every game.

AdventHealth Stadium in Rome will host the Class A Div. I, Class 3A and Class 2A championships—starting with No. 1 ranked Gordon Lee and Pepperell for the Class A Div. I crown. Gordon Lee (four) and Pepperell (eight) share a combined 12 all-time state titles, however, Pepperell’s last championship came in 1980, while Gordon Lee won its most recent in 2019. Both the Class 3A and 2A finals will guarantee a first-ever state champion with Troup and Cherokee Bluff facing off in Class 3A and Franklin County and Rockmart meeting for the 2A title.

SAVANNAH’S SHOWDOWN

Georgia Southern’s JI Clements Stadium will host an all-Savannah showdown between Calvary Day and Savannah Christian in the Class A-3A Private finals on Monday. Calvary Day last won a championship in 2007 and Savannah Christian last won a championship in 2017 when it captured its first and only state crown. The Class A Div. II championship series between Lanier County and Wilcox County will open with its double-header on Tuesday. Top-ranked Lanier County swept Bowdon in the semifinals and Wilcox County is coming off a 7-3 Game 3 victory over ECI this past Thursday.
