Falcons hire Cox as defensive line coach

The Atlanta Falcons announced on Saturday that they have hired Bryan Cox as their defensive line coach. Cox has spent the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coaching the defensive front seven and serving as a pass rush specialist.

Cox was a big key in Gerald McCoy’s success the last two seasons. He tallied 14 sacks, 36 quarterback hits and 24 tackles for loss during that span. McCoy reached the Pro Bowl in 2012.

But before Cox was doing good things at Tampa, he spent six seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins. Cox worked for the Dolphins in 2011 where he helped them tally 41 sacks. He spent his first three seasons as an assistant coach for the New York Jets where he helped them record 41 sacks and 94 rushing yards per game in 2008.

Before spending time as a coach, Cox was a player in the NFL for 12 seasons. Cox played linebacker and was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the 1991 NFL Draft. Cox spent five seasons with the Dolphins, two seasons with the Chicago Bears, three seasons with the New York Jets, one season with the New England Patriots and one season with the New Orleans Saints. During his career, Cox racked up 51.5 sacks in 165 games. He was selected to the Pro Bowl three times and won a Super Bowl in 2001 with the Patriots.

The hire of Cox comes on the heels of the Falcons hiring Mike Tice as their offensive line coach. The Falcons hope Tice and Cox can instill a toughness to both lines, which was missing this past season. With the coaching staff now in place, they will now focus their attention to the Senior Bowl, where they will coach the North team.
