Falcons HS Coach of the Week: Pete Wiggins

Presented by Ford, the Atlanta Falcons Coach of the Week program recognizes 12 high school football coaches across the state of Georgia for their hard work and dedication to making a difference in student-athletes lives on and off the field over the course of the GHSA season. The final winner of the 2016 season is Pete Wiggins of Callaway High School.

Wiggins joined the program in 2005 and has turned the Cavaliers into one of the state’s most consistent winners, recording a 102-39 record including a perfect 11-0 this season as Class AA’s No. 4 ranked team heading into the playoffs. The Cavs have won six region titles under Wiggins’ guidance.

“I’m honored to be named for this award,” said Wiggins of winning Coach of the Week. “There’s a lot that goes into our program being successful. I’m surrounded by a group of coaches that are committed to our school, our football team and our players.”

Off the field, the football team and cheerleaders have visited the local elementary school to welcome students.

“I don’t know who’s had more fun with it, our kids or the elementary kids,” quipped Wiggins.

Over his decade plus of coaching in Hogansville, Wiggins has one favorite aspect.

“The relationships you build with the kids, the families. Seeing kids go on and be successful. I think football is the greatest game. I think that it prepares kids for life down the road. It instills a work ethic in them that they will carry for a lifetime.”

Wiggins has coached tons of talent while at Callaway with his latest star being current Georgia Bulldog Terry Godwin. A class of 2015 five-star athlete, Godwin is now a primary target in the passing game as a sophomore wide receiver for the Dawgs.

The Cavaliers are off to their best start in program history and are one win away from tying their 2013 school record of 12-2 where Callaway fell to Buford in the semifinals. Coach Wiggins and the Cavs continue their quest for a ring as they host Brooks County this Friday in the second round of the state playoffs.
