Former Grayson multi-sport athlete Ian Schieffelin will make one of the rarer moves in college sports as the Clemson basketball star will be taking his talents to the gridiron to play for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers football team when the fall comes around.
Schieffelin had been an important member of the Clemson basketball program from 2021-2025 as the senior will use his final year of collegiate eligibility to play tight end for the football team.
Last year for the Tigers, Schieffelin averaged over 12 points and nine rebounds per game, leading the Tigers to a program record, 26-win season in 2025.
Listed at 6-foot-8 and 240-pounds, Schieffelin has played an integral part to Clemson’s recent basketball success as he helped the Tigers reach the programs first Elite Eight in 44 years before the Tigers were defeated by Alabama in the regional semifinal matchup in 2024. With the help of Schieffelin, the Tigers made the NCAA Tournament in his final two years playing for the program. He played in 134 games while starting 99 and totaled 1,067 points, 884 rebounds, 262 assists, 66 steals and 58 blocks. His numbers throughout his four seasons propelled him onto the Clemson basketball record books as he became the 47th Tiger to score 1,000 points in program history along with finishing seventh for more career rebounds in a Clemson uniform.
Schieffelin earned a number of accolades during his time with the basketball team including ACC Most Improved Player in the 2023-2024 season as well as Second-team All-ACC in his final year of playing basketball.
In high school, Schieffelin was rated as a 3-star recruit on 247Sports.com and Rivals .com, averaging 12 points and with 12 rebounds for Grayson while helping lead the Rams to a Region 8-Class 7A championship as a sophomore.
According to USAtoday.com and ESPN, Schieffelin had a conversation with Indianapolis Colts tight end Mo Alie-Cox about making the move over to the gridiron as the Colts tight end made a similar move after playing four years of basketball at VCU.
Clemson has a history of multi-sport athletes and Schieffelin is following in the footsteps of Clemson greats, DeAndre Hopkins (football and basketball), CJ Spiller (football and track) and a handful of others who have played multiple sports during their time in a Tigers uniform.
