Former Norcross star and 2013 Naismith Prep Player of the Year Diamond DeShields will transfer from UNC after an outstanding freshman season. Tar Heels head coach Sylvia Hatchell released a statement on Thursday that revealed the surprising news.

“I do not know or understand why Diamond DeShields has decided to leave The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,” said Hatchell. “It breaks my heart that I will not have the opportunity to coach Diamond and help develop her on and off the court. I love her and wish her well.”

DeShields led UNC with 18 points per game and helped the young star-studded team finish the season No. 7 in the national poll. The Tar Heels advanced to the Elite 8 of the 2014 NCAA tournament and DeShields was named National Freshman of the Year. According to The Daily Tar Heel, DeShields set the record for the most points by an ACC freshman in a single season with 648 and also set ACC freshman records for field goals made with 248, field goals attempted with 582 and double-digit scoring performances with 32.

DeShields sent out this tweet explaining her decision to leave Chapel Hill. The next school for the 6-foot-1 shooting guard is yet to be announced.
