Friday Roundup: Thrashers don’t lose ground after loss, Aminu goes pro

The Atlanta Thrashers failed to capitalize on a struggling Washington squad as well as losses by some of the teams just ahead of them in the standings with a 2-1 loss to the Caps last night . The Thrashers fell behind in the first before tying the game on rookie Tim Stapleton’s goal in just his fourth game since being called up from the minors. In the third period, Matt Bradley scored his first goal in nearly three months to give Washington the 2-1 win.  Boston and Philadelphia both lost last night, so Atlanta remains two points out of the eighth spot .

The University of Georgia Bulldogs picked up its second commitment of the week when Dublin High School alum and current reigning freshman of the year at Northwest Florida College Sherrard Brantley "committed " last night to the program. Brantley reported announced via his Facebook page though his high school coach admitted that he believed Brantley would choose between LSU and Georgia by today. The 6’2 guard scored 13.7 ppg, including 43% from 3-point range and is a decent free throw shooting, making 77.8% of his freebies. He will have three years of eligibility after signing with Georgia. Brantley can officially join the Bulldogs on April 14, when the late signing period opens. Donte Williams of Miller Grove committed earlier this week to play for Mark Fox.

Former Wesleyan and Norcross basketball star Al-Farouq Aminu will skip his final two college seasons and enter the NBA draft according to his Wake Forest coach. Aminu led the ACC with 10.7 rebounds per game last season and scored 15.8 points per game as he led the Demon Deacons to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Dino Gaudio, Aminu’s coach, predicts that he will be one of the first 15 picks selected in this year’s draft.
