FULTON BEAT, APRIL 30-MAY 6: Individuals prepare for gymnastics championships; golf teams qualify for state final

Most of the spring sports have reached the state tournament stage, and Fulton County teams are prevalent in many. It will be interesting to see just how many teams will make a run in soccer and tennis since there are a few county teams favored in those sports.

ON THE PITCH …
The GHSA state soccer tournament starts this week and there are many county teams that will be participating. Among the boys and girls teams are Northview, Milton, Chattahoochee, Riverwood, Westminster and Blessed Trinity. Also included are the Centennial boys, Holy Innocents boys, Johns Creek girls and Lovett girls.

The favorite in the Class 5A boys bracket are the No. 1 Northview Titans who finished the regular season at 13-1. They gave up only 15 goals in 14 games, including five shutouts. The team scored nearly four goals per game.

The girls team with the best chance at a state title in class A/AA is Blessed Trinity. They are the No. 1 team in Area 10 and had a great season that included five shutout wins.
IN THE GYM …
The state gymnastics meet will take place at Westminster on Friday. Chattahoochee and Milton are two of the five squads taking place in the team competition. Kelsey Kopec of Alpharetta will be competing in the Individual Group 1 in the all-around, beams, vault and floor exercise. In Individual Group 2, Sarah Grady of Westminster will be competing on beam.
ON THE COURT …
The Alpharetta boys have already advanced to the third round of the state tournament after victories over Chattahoochee, 3-0, and North Cobb, 3-1. They are the clear-cut favorite in Class 5A and have been undefeated all year. Milton, the third ranked team in Region 6, advanced to the second round where they will face Brookwood. Northview, another favorite who is ranked No. 1 in Region 7, beat Wheeler in the first round and will face Harrison in the second. Westlake advanced to the second round after their first-round victory over Houston County.
Johns Creek and Riverwood advance to the second round in Class 3A. Lovett and Blessed Trinity advanced in Class 2A.

In the girls bracket Centennial beat Mill Creek, 3-2 to advance and Milton upset Chattahoochee, 3-1 in Class 5A. Johns Creek and Riverwood were first-round winners in Class 3A. Westminster moved on after beating Pepperrell, 3-0 in Class 2A. Lovett and Blessed Trinity joined the boys teams as they both advanced to the second round.
ON THE LINKS …
Last week, county golf teams played in region tournaments that also served as qualifiers for the state tourneys.

In Class 5A, Region 6, Milton and Roswell were the top two qualifiers with the Eagles shooting 300 as a team and the Hornets shooting 306. The top score individually was by Alpharetta’s Tom Howard with a 70. Johns Creek qualified second in Class 3A, Region 5, with an overall score of 309. Westminster and Blessed Trinity were first and second in Class 2A, Region 6. Holy Innocents, led by Blake Snellings low score of 74, qualified first in Class A, Region 5.
The Holy Innocents girls also qualified for the state tournament with a second-place finish in Region 5-A as they shot 193 as a team. Westminster shot 160 and finished second in Class A, Region 6. Jessica Haigood had a low score of 75 to lead Roswell to first place in Class 5A, Region 6. The team had an overall score of 167. Chattahoochee qualified in Class 5A, Region 7 with a score of 159.
The state tournaments will take place at 10 golf courses around the state and will start on May 3.

ON THE DIAMOND …
The regular season is still going on for baseball and the team that has dominated the season so far is Milton. They are 20-4 after wins over Kell, 6-2, and Centennial, 16-2. Tyler Carpenter threw four innings of shutout baseball before giving up a run in the fifth. He pitched a complete game going seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out 11 batters. It was Carpenter’s fifth win on the season. First baseman Alex Close had two singles, a homerun and three RBIS to lead the team. The Centennial win clinched at least a No. 3 seed in the state playoffs.
