Greater Atlanta Christian and Lovett girls soccer teams prepare for their second meeting of the season, as the two top teams in Class A-3A Private battle for both schools’ second straight championship.
GAC enters the championship after a dominant four-game stretch in which they outscored their playoff opponents 30-0. The Spartans were the top-ranked team in the class for most of the season, starting off 11-0. However, they lost their first game of the season on March 25 to Lovett, knocking them out of the top spot and making Lovett the team to beat in the classification. GAC did not lose again until the final week of the season. However, they lost the final two games of the regular season, a result that was concerning at the time. However, the playoffs proved those two games to be meaningless, as the Spartans immediately beat St. Francis 14-0 in the first round. The next three games followed suit, with a 4-0 win over Darlington, a 10-0 win over Calvary Day, and a 2-0 win over Whitefield Academy.
Lovett has been just as dominant as GAC. The Lions are 16-3-1 on the season, and their three losses are about as good as losses can be. Their first came against 6A state finalist Buford, the second to 5A semifinalist Cambridge, and the third to 4A state finalist Marist. Their playoff run has been nearly as impressive as GAC’s, with the Lions outscoring their opponents 31-1, the lone goal coming against No. 4 seed Wesleyan in an 8-1 blowout in the quarterfinals.
The championship match is full of storylines and features one of the most intriguing matchups of the year. The biggest storyline will be the rematch: Can GAC adjust after their 5-1 loss in March, or is Lovett simply too much on their quest for a second straight title?
