Blessed Trinity rallied out of a 4-0 deficit and trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before edging Cartersville 7-6 in the eighth inning with Carson Zagryn’s game-winning RBI single into leftfield that brought home freshman speedster Andrew Cochran. With the win, Blessed Trinity took the series 2-1 (3-6, 7-3, 7-6). Cartersville built its lead with a four-run top of the fifth inning when Cam Cochran singled to open frame. Head coach Kyle Tucker put in Gavin Renegar to pinch run for Cochran, Julez Pratt drew a walk and then Brayden Logan singled to load the bases with zero outs. Cartersville’s Nolan Elrod hit into a double play and Renegar scored to put the Canes up 1-0. David Vargas kept the rally going with a walk and Thomas Peters singled to centerfield to drive home Vargas before a pair of throwing errors by the Titans led to Logan and Peters scoring later in the inning to put Cartersville up 4-0.
Blessed Trinity’s Terrance Bowen connected on a two-run homer to leftfield in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2, but Cartersville added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning with a Brayden Logan single that drove home Clint Hosea—who was pinch running for Julez Pratt after his single earlier in the frame. Cartersville’s Maddox Frazier came in for starter Avery Shiflett in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out and a runner on second base Aiden Zagryn was walked and advanced to second after a wild pitch.
Kaden Kisz singled to left field to advance Zagryn to third and then Wesley Bass hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Zagryn to cut the deficit to 5-3 with two outs. Frazier struck out Gavin Greene to get out of the jam.
Cartersville added an unearned run in the top of the seventh to push its lead to 6-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Davis Petersen drew a walk to start the frame and Quinn Davis and Terrance Bowen singled to load the bases with zero outs. The Canes brought in senior Logan Shrewsbury to pitch for Frazier. Blessed Trinity’s Carson Zagryn struck out for the first out and then Aiden Zagryn scored Peterson on a sac fly to centerfield to cut the deficit to 6-4. The Canes intentionally walked Dawson with two outs to load the bases and then Kisz singled down the left side to drive home Bowen and Davis to tie the game 6-6 heading into extra innings.
Carson Zagryn’s two-out, game-winning RBI single gave the Titans’ their-first lead of the game and clinched the series to deliver Blessed Trinity its fourth all-time state title and first since 2015.
