Gonzalez, Mann receive Arthur Ashe honors

It was recently announced that soccer’s Candace Gonzales and Christa Mann were named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars for 2008. The award, presented by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine, honors those who excel on and off the field and is named after the legendary tennis player and activist.Gonzales, a junior, was named to the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Women’s Soccer Second Team. She has maintained a 3.76 cumulative grade-point average, the third-highest GPA on the Second Team. The

midfielder started 15 games for the Panthers this season and tallied one assist. Mann, a senior who has since graduated, was named to the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Women’s Soccer Fourth Team. Maintaining a 3.22 GPA in print journalism, the Peachtree City native has since moved on to play professional soccer in Iceland. Christa started every game for State this past season (18) and recorded one shot as a defender. 

IN OTHER NEWS 

Seems like more former Panther basketball players have been on campus recently. I had a chance to talk with Marcus Brown who was telling me about his recent travels. He played basketball in Beirut, Lebanon this past season, spending two months there with a team called Antranik, where he averaged 20 points and eight rebounds. From there he went to Brazil where he played with Ulbra for a couple of months and averaged eight points coming off the bench. When he’s back home, he’s been working as a substitute teacher and plans to begin working on a graduate degree. He’s keeping his pro basketball options open as well.

As part of the Georgia State Athletics Department’s work with the Atlanta After-School All-Stars, the Panther baseball team hosted a three-hour clinic last week at Panthersville. The After-School All-Stars is a non-profit organization that works with middle-school children, helping to engage them in activities and ongoing relationships that increase confidence and encourage success in all areas of their lives – at home, in school and in the community. The Atlanta chapter specifically works with the eight middle schools in the Atlanta Public Schools system, and the children participating in last week’s camp came from Walter Leonard Parks Middle School. In coordination with the Atlanta After-School All-Stars, the Georgia State Athletics Department will offer weekly camps until the end of July for participants in the program. Youths in the program will also work with the soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball, basketball and golf teams at Georgia State this summer.

Ken Coggins was recently named the new strength and conditioning coach for the basketball team, replacing Tredell Dorsey, who took a similar position at Delaware State. … Men’s tennis player and CAA Player of the Year, Nejc Podkrajsek, moved up to No. 122 in the final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings. … Follow the Panthers online at www.georgiastatesports.com.
