Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame ready to celebrate its 10th class of inductees

The 10th Annual Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate its Class of 2019 on May 1 at the Sonesta Gwinnett Place Atlanta in Duluth. Providing this year’s keynote speech will be Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban.

This year’s inductees includes: Coach Mickey Conn, a South Gwinnett HS graduate who coached at Grayson and led the Rams to a 15-0 season and state championship in 2011. Conn has also been a part of national championship teams as a Clemson assistant coach in 2019 and as a player for Alabama in 1992.

Brookwood alumni Rennie Curran is also joining the Hall of Fame. Curran is still the all-time leading tackler for the Broncos. At the University of Georgia he earned All-SEC and All-American recognition as a linebacker and was a third round pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Coach Angie Hembree, an award-winning girls basketball coach of six state championship teams (2001, 2002, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2013) at Collins Hill HS and Norcross HS who coached many girls who went on to play in college and professionally.

David Saville, a Norcross graduate and team manager for the Blue Devils football program, with eight seasons as equipment manager for the Clemson Tigers.

Coach John Sawyer, a multi-sport coach and teacher at South Gwinnett for 36 years until his retirement in 2000. He produced a 600-140 career coaching record with the Comets Baseball.

Megan Wiggins, a three-sport standout (softball, track, and basketball) and four-year athletic letter winner at Shiloh. She is also a record-holder with UGA Softball, and the MVP with the Chicago Bandits pro team.

“We thank our sponsors, honorees, and the hundreds of community members who will attend and support this event,” says Aaron Lupuloff, senior executive director of the GCPS Foundation Fund, noting that tickets and  sponsorship opportunities are still available. “When athletics and education come together to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Gwinnett Sports HOF with Coach Nick Saban, the winners will be the 180,000+ students of GCPS,” he says.

There will also be a 2019 HOF Silent Auction (April 28-May 1) that features high-end electronics, sports memorabilia, and more. All proceeds from the auction and the induction event benefit the GCPS Foundation Fund.
