Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic begins at Norcross; basketball scores from Friday

The first day of the Hawks-Naismith Classic began at Norcross with four games Friday before an eight-game marathon scheduled for Saturday, which includes a game between two high-classed boys programs when No. 1 McEachern faces No. 4 Grayson at 7:15 p.m.

Here is a look at what happened on Friday.

Buford 48, Norcross 42 (girls): The Class AAAAA No. 1 Buford girls team outlasted Class AAAAAAA Norcross to move to 10-0 on the season. Buford took an 11-7 lead after the first quarter and pushed its advantage to 24-14 at the break. Norcross put together a 17-11 run in the third quarter and trailed 35-31 after three quarters. The Wolves secured the victory with a 13-11 effort in the fourth quarter. Furman commitment Tate Walters, a 5-foot-7 guard, finished with 22 points and was 6-of-14 from the field and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. She grabbed five rebounds, had four assists and one steal. Tamori Plantin scored eight points with two rebounds and one steal. Tatum Ozment added seven points, grabbed four rebounds. Ashyia Willis finished with six points, three steals, two assists and a block. Katelyn Klein led Buford with seven rebounds. Norcross was led in scoring by Devyne Turner and Yamani Paul with 12 points each.

Buford 78, Wesleyan 63 (boys): Sebastian Augustave’s 33 points led Buford past Class A-Private No. 4 Wesleyan in the second game of the evening. Buford led 22-16 after the first quarter and 40-33 at the break. Wesleyan tied the game at 50 with a 3-pointer by Jalen Fulwood and took a 53-50 lead with 2:28 left in the third quarter, but Buford outscored Wesleyan 19-8 in the fourth quarter. Buford’s Caleb Williams finished with 16 points, and Caleb Blackwell scored nine. Tate Gilley led Wesleyan with 20 points, and Thomas Chipman scored 15. Fullwood finished with six points and eight rebounds.

Lovejoy 60, Wesleyan 44 (girls): Class AAAAAA No. 1 Lovejoy defeated Class A-Private No. 5 Wesleyan in the third game of the evening. Lovejoy was led by Bryana Hardy who finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a block. Genesis Bryant scored 17 points with six rebounds, four assists, five steals and a block. The victory moved the Wildcats to 10-0 on the season. Paige Lyons led Wesleyan with 15 points and Alyssa Phillip scored 12 points with 15 rebounds. Avyonce Carter finished with 10 points and four steals.

Pebblebrook 67, Chattahoochee 55 (boys): Class AAAAAAA No. 10 Pebblebrook defeated Class AAAAAA No. 7 Chattahoochee in the final game and, after leading 27-26 at the half and 43-42 after three quarters, a 24-13 run through the fourth quarter proved the difference for the Falcons. Jamall Clyce led Pebblebrook with 25 points on 12-of-19 shooting. Kaleb Washington was 7-of-14 and finished with 17 points and Danny Stubbs Jr. scored 10 points. Chattahoochee was led by Cameron Sheffield’s 15 points. The victory moved the Falcons to 6-5 on the season.
