Kell comes into 2025 with arguably the best defensive back room in the state. With guys such as Jalen Williams, Jowell Combay, and more the Longhorns could have the lofty goal of a 4A state championship. Carlos Barneman Jr. is another young star in Kell’s defensive back room who looks to make an impact as a sophomore.
But then again, it’s still June. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves with the state championship talk.
However, defense wins championships.
Last season, Barneman led Kell’s junior varsity in tackles and played a little with the varsity team. He also returned a kickoff in one of his JV games.
Barneman has been getting reps this offseason at Safety as well as outside linebacker. He is one of only two underclassmen playing in the secondary (Kamoni Adams is the other).
With Barneman is approaching his sophomore season, Barneman is working to be the best player he can be, and making the most impact that he can.
He told Score Atlanta’s Wesley Powell, “I want to be Top 5 on the team in tackles, top 5 in picks, and contribute enough to earn some sort of regional honors.
Kell is loaded with talent, so accomplishing that will be difficult, but he is up to the challenge.
He had two interceptions in last week’s Brent Key/Corky Kell 7-on-7 tournament as Kell went on to win the day. They also won a 7-on-7 tournament at Georgia the day before, and had a pretty good performance at Georgia State’s 7-on-7.

He has also been competing at many football camps to get better for the new season.

Barneman is becoming more-and-more of a must see talent as they approach the upcoming season. His Kell squad will open its 2025 season in the Corky Kell plus Dave Hunter Classic as they play host to South Paulding.
