North Atlanta Youth Football and Cheer Day will take place Sunday, March 30 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Roswell Area Park. The event, which will be hosted by Kids and Pros, provides local aspiring youth football players, cheerleaders and their parents with a chance to participate in information sessions and training clinics. Former Atlanta Falcon Buddy Curry is the founder of Kids and Pros, which holds camps like this around the southeast.

“We are going to do basically three things,” said Curry. “First of all, we’re going to teach the kids the fundamentals of the game: how to pass, run and block, and we’re going to put them through drills. Second, we’re going to have a parent-informational session. We’re going to bring the parents to an inside facility and we’re going to have a Riddell (representative) talk about equipment, we’re going to have a doctor talk about concussions, and I am going to teach them the tackling circuit so the parents know what a good hit looks like. Then we actually go back outside and conduct the tackling circuit on the field so we get the youth coaches on the field and engaged so they can actually see it. The last thing we’re going to do is have an NFL player share his life story. These are compelling stories that really help inspire kids to do great things and be achievers in the world. ”

Curry is a master trainer for USA Football, and is a pro at teaching participants the “heads up” tackling technique, which helps reduce head and neck injuries in football. This safer method of tackling promotes the usage of the shoulder in making tackles as opposed to the head or neck.

At the event on March 30, parents and prospective youth players will be coached and instructed on what a clean “heads up” hit looks like. Players will get a chance to be coached by current and former Atlanta Falcons, Curry being one of them. At similar camps, current Falcons Zeke Motta, Malliciah Goodman, Cliff Matthews, Jonathan Massaquoi and Patrick DiMarco turned up to help instruct. Curry indicated that two or three of them will be on hand for the North Atlanta event. Also, former Falcons Bobby Butler, Robert Moore, Floyd Hodge and Ken Oxendine will be on hand to coach, in addition to Curry.

The clinic is free for all who attend. The goal is for more than 250 players and 100 cheerleaders to take part. Falcons cheerleaders will also be on hand to meet with aspiring youth cheerleaders, who will have a clinic of their own.
