Kennesaw State sports information

Two players with Kennesaw State ties will participate in the 2012 Major League Baseball 14th Annual All-Star Futures game this Sunday in Kansas City. Zack Wheeler and Tyler Austin will take part in the event for Team USA in the USA vs. the World format.

Wheeler signed to play with Kennesaw State but was drafted out of East Paulding by the San Francisco Giants with the No. 6 overall pick in 2009. The right-handed pitcher was traded to the New York Mets in 2011 after striking out 70 batters in 59 innings in 2010. Since joining the Mets organization, Wheeler has made 12 starts for Binghamton, recording a 6-3 record with a 1.88 ERA. He was recently named the Mets’ No. 2 pitching prospect by MinorLeagueBaseball.com.

Austin, a native of Conyers, was selected by the Yankees in the 2010 draft and has played first, third and outfield this season for the Charleston RiverDogs. His 14 home runs leads the South Atlantic League and his .320 batting average is second in the SAL. MinorLeagueBaseball.com ranks Austin as the No. 9 prospect in the Yankees’ farm system.

The Futures game can be seen on ESPN 2 and is one of the many highlights of MLB’s All-Star week.
