Lakeside High School: State’s bellwether school of the 1970’s announces new Sports HOF Class

The Lakeside High School Sports Hall of Fame will induct 36 members into their third class in a ceremony at the school on April 17. The school, now 56 years old, won 26 team state championships in the 1970’s and produced some of the best athletes ever to come out of Dekalb County. The 2021 class will consist of 15 football players including John Hayworth, the school’s very first First-Team All-State player as a linebacker/offensive lineman in 1966, who went on to play at Auburn University and was a captain his senior year. Also gong in is Kevin Anthony, Class of 1982, who started at quarterback for the University of North Carolina and went on to work in the front office for the Atlanta Falcons. Hayworth and Anthony will join 13 other football players to be inducted.

The class also includes Shawn Cartmill, who was the goal keeper on Clemson’s 1984 national championship soccer team, and Greg Lester, an All-ACC football player at Georgia Tech, where he caught 93 passes for 1,688 yards and 13 touchdowns and was a member of the 1990 National Championship team. The school will now have 98 members in the Hall which is prominently displayed outside the cafeteria at the school.  There are also two special awards given  every year to someone that may have not been an athlete but their contributions to the athletic program were great. One is called the John Kicklighter Service Award.

This year’s Kicklighter winner will be Chris Chilton and his mother Nini. Chris was an outstanding basketball and baseball player at Lakeside and has worked in the Dekalb Sports Information office for more than 30 years, promoting thousands of athletes through the years. His mother Nini, who passed recently at the age of 84, volunteered for the school’s sports programs well after his children had graduated and her daughter Carol was inducted into the Hall last year for soccer. The Beth Cooley Cheerleading Award does to Joni Maulden, who cheered for all five of her years at Lakeside (school went 8-12th then), was an exemplary student and has continued to stay close with many of her Lakeside friends. All of the Class of 2020 inductees can be found below with his or her corresponding sport.
