Macon doubleheader to open historic 25th MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic

The 25th edition of MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic will kick off the 2016 football season in the heart of Georgia with two games at Mercer University in Macon. This is the first time the event will be played outside the metro Atlanta area and the games will take place on Thursday, August 18, at Mercer’s Five-Star Stadium.

In the first of a two-year contract in Macon, middle Georgia heavyweights Lee County, Jones County, Houston County and Mary Persons will participate in Thursday’s action. Houston County, quarterbacked by Class of 2017 Alabama-commit and AJC 2015 Class AAAAA Offensive Player of the Year Jake Fromm will face Mary Persons at 5:45 p.m. followed by Lee County and Jones County in the backend of the doubleheader.

The games in Macon will be televised live by FOX Sports South and streamed live the FOX Sports GO app while Sports Radio 92.9 The Game (WZGC- FM) will do the games on radio. The games are also expected to be broadcasted in Macon on radio.

“There is such a rabid fan base in the middle Georgia area and having the games played at Mercer’s first class facility is a great fit,” explained Dave Hunter, Director of the Corky Kell Classic. “We are making it bigger and better than ever just like Corky would’ve wanted it and the exposure it will give middle Georgia football is tremendous.”

In Friday’s games, the Corky Kell welcomes four new teams as Buford, Roswell, South Forsyth and Hillgrove will play at McEachern High School. This is the third straight year McEachern’s Cantrell Stadium, the largest high school stadium in the state, will host the games on Friday night. Buford and Roswell, who played for the state championships in their respective classifications in 2015, will face off in the opening game at 5:45 p.m., followed by quarterfinalist South Forsyth against Cobb County power Hillgrove, who lost in the first round of the playoffs last season.

The Georgia Dome will host Saturday’s five-game marathon with nationally-recognized and back-to-back State Champions Colquitt County highlighting a field of former state champions and playoff perennials. This year’s Corky Kell Classic will also introduce a new era of Georgia High School Football as the newly-formed Class 7A highpoints the Peach State’s new hierarchy.

Class 5A Kell opens with a 9 a.m. kickoff with Class 6A Tucker and two teams from Class 7A, Brookwood and North Gwinnett, will play in the 11:45 a.m. timeslot. Walton returns to the Corky Kell lineup and will battle with Norcross in another Class 7A showdown at 2:45 p.m. and Colquitt County and Mill Creek will return to the field for a rematch of this year’s semifinals at 5:45. The final game is scheduled for an 8:45 p.m. kickoff between McEachern and Archer. Archer is making its first Saturday appearance in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic after splitting its two Friday night appearances the past two Corky Kell’s at McEachern. Eleven of the 48 teams that reside in Georgia’s new Class 7A will be playing in this year’s Corky Kell Classic.

The games in Atlanta on Friday and Saturday will be televised for the third straight year on FOX Sports Southeast and streamed live on the FOX Sports GO app. The games on radio will be on both Sports Radio 929 The Game (WZGC-FM) and WAOK-AM.
