Class AAA boys championship recap

Ty Freeman

Tookie Brown led Morgan County to its first-ever state title with a game-high 36 points as the Bulldogs crushed Buford 69-45 in the Class AAA state championship. Morgan County exploded to a 20-5 lead at the end of the opening quarter and never gave Buford a chance.

“We got beat last year in the second round because we didn’t get out of the gates quick,” said head coach Charlemagne Gibbons. “Our motto this year was that we were going to get out of the gates quick.”

Morgan County scored 15 points off of turnovers in the first quarter and held Buford to just two fast break points all game. C.J. Thurman threw down a massive alley-oop while spinning 360 degrees to the delight of a massive Morgan County crowd in the first half and controlled the paint with his 15 points off of 7-of-8 shooting.

“He [Thurman] put us on his shoulders in the second half all postseason and this was a signature for him to be one of the best big men in the state and I think he signed off on that tonight,” said Gibbons.

Senior Davon Gibbs helped limit Buford’s D’Marcus Simonds to just six points and finished with five points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Buford only took five foul shots all game and was outscored 44-to-18 in the paint.
