Mountain View names John Poitevint new head football coach

Former Brookwood Defensive Coordinator John Poitevint was named the new head football coach of Mountain View High School on Thursday, becoming the fifth head football coach in the school’s 12-year history. The program experienced a tragedy this past month when its former head coach Rob Kellogg passed away at the age of 58 on April 28 following complications involving an infection. The incident forced Kellogg to miss time early in the 2019 season and the job has remained vacant in the weeks since his passing. Kellogg was promoted from the Bears offensive coordinator position in 2018 and led the Bears to a 12-10 record in his two seasons spent at the school.

As for Poitevint, he has nearly two-decades of coaching experience that includes positions at Troy University, Northview (AL), Dacula, Kennesaw Mountain and Central Gwinnett. Becoming a head coach is something that Poitevint has been working towards achieving and he is looking forward to leading the Bears program moving forward.

“I wish the circumstances were different,” said Poitevint. “This is a tragic situation for the Kellogg family, the community and especially these players, they really loved coach Kellogg. I know that we are going to honor him with the way we play this year and we are going to play our tails off for him.”

June workouts are around the corner and Poitevint is looking forward to meeting each of his new players. He will be tasked with preparing the Bears for a schedule that includes a historic showdown with Brookwood as the two Gwinnett schools are set to meet for the first time in their respective histories on Oct. 2.

“That’s one of those things where if you have to draw it up in a perfect way, you would definitely not want to do that. You are going to have mixed emotions playing against those former players of mine and people that I care so much about at Brookwood. But I am going to treat it like any other game. People that know me know that. It’s all about Mountain View and Brookwood; it isn’t going to be about me. People may want to spin it that way, but that is not where my focus is going to be. I’m extremely excited to be at Mountain View.”
