Newnan earns third GHSA baseball state championship after mercy-ruling Houston County

The Newnan Cougars baseball program earned the schools third-ever GHSA baseball state championship on Monday night at Coolray Stadium as they swept Houston County in the championship series 3-1 in the first game followed by a mercy-ruled 11-1 victory in the final game of the series to clinch the schools first state championship since 1991.

Monday night’s championship victory for Newnan brought the Cougars their third GHSA baseball state championship adding to their championship finishes in both 1951 and 1991, the schools first baseball title in 34 years.

Newnan’s victory kept a fifth title from coming home to Houston County as the Cougars finished the 2025 season at 32-5.

In game one, the scoring got started in the third inning as the Cougars brought home two runs thanks to a Hayes Maginnis sacrifice fly out to right field and a Brodie Campbell RBI-single to put two on the board for Newnan in the bottom of the third inning.

Houston County answered in the top of the fourth inning with an Isaiah Galason home run to make it a 2-1 ball game. An error from the Bears in the bottom of the fourth inning however gave Newnan a two-run lead once again as the score grew to 3-1, which it stayed for the remainder of the game.

In game two, the Cougars poured it on in the final game of the series as they mercy-ruled Houston County, defeating them 11-1 in five innings.

With a four-run lead heading into the top of the fourth, Newnan scored seven runs in the inning on four hits. The scoring began with a Maginnis single bringing home two runs followed by a wild pitch that brought home another run. A single from Reid Davis and Bryce Stanfiled being hit by a pitch brought home two more runs. Caden Lamb and Dax Kilby each walked, bringing home two more runs to bring the final score to 11-1 after only five innings.

The offense was inapparent for Houston County as the nationally-ranked Bears were mercy-ruled in the state championship after taking down state powerhouses Pope and Loganville in the previous two rounds.
