PANTHER BEAT: Hoops squad signs two post players

ATLANTA-Georgia State basketball coach Rod Barnes has bolstered his frontcourt with a pair of talented post players in 6-10 Eric Buckner of Gulf Coast Community College (Panama City, Fla.) and 6-7 Brandon McGee of Wabash Valley College (Mt. Carmel, Ill.), both of whom signed National Letters of Intent on the first day of the spring signing period. The two junior college standouts join Georgia State’s three early signees: 5-10 guard DeVonta White (Centennial High School, Roswell, Ga.), 6-0 guard Javonte Maynor (South Gwinnett High School, Snellville, Ga.) and 6-6 wing Harold Doby (Oldsmar Christian Academy, Augusta, Ga.). Buckner and McGee each have two seasons of eligibility.

"We are really excited about these two players," said Barnes. "In addition to their talent, size, and experience, both are very versatile forwards who can play down low or step outside."

Buckner and McGee each have two seasons of eligibility. Georgia State graduated its top four post players (Trey Hampton, Ousman Krubally, Xavier Hansbro and Kevin Lott).

Buckner averaged 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds and was named second-team All-Panhandle Conference, despite missing four weeks in January and February with a broken hand. He played two seasons for coach Jay Powell at Gulf Coast, adding 6.8 ppg and 5.7 rpg as a freshman in 2008-09.

Hailing from Bamberg, S.C., Buckner averaged 16 points and 14 rebounds as a senior at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High.

McGee, from Chicago, Ill., averaged 14.1 points in his one season at Wabash Valley, although he also missed several weeks with an elbow injury. He was rated No. 9 among junior college sophomores by Midstates Hoops.

After signing with with Indiana out of high school, McGee averaged 1.5 ppg and 1.0 rebounds in 17 games for the Hoosiers in 2007-08. He spent the 2008-09 year at Auburn but redshirted before transferring to Wabash Valley.

As a senior at Chicago’s Crane High, McGee was a top 30 prospect in 2007. The two-time all-city performer averaged 12 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as a senior at Crane.
