Upsets littered the landscape of the first round of the girls GHSA soccer playoffs. Peachtree Ridge entered the playoffs believing a state title was within reach only to be bounced in round one by unranked Brookwood 1-0 after the Broncos won 4-3 on PKs. Brookwood captured its fourth shootout win of the year to take down the Region 7-AAAAA champion and No. 2 ranked Lions. … No. 8 Flowery Branch entered Wednesday’s contest with Johns Creek posting a 17-2 record with just five goals allowed. Johns Creek scored just 1:46 into the match and added another pair to drop the Falcons 3-1. … While defending a title is never easy, the Harrison Hoyas didn’t seem to feel the pressure last night. The Harrison girls are seeking a second straight Class AAAAA crown, and the defense got off on the right foot with a 9-0 win over Bradwell Institute. Anna Sims netted three goals for Harrison. … The team Harrison defeated in the 2011 finals, North Gwinnett, benefited from a Brook Bortles’ corner kick to knock out Grayson 1-0. … In boys action from Tuesday, Collins Hill blanked Grayson 5-0 and will face Luella in round two. Luella managed to spring the upset over Region 1-AAAAA runner-up Coffee. … It took PKs, but Region 3-AAAAA champion Camden County prevailed 3-2 over Campbell. The Wildcats won the shootout 3-1. … The Walton boys continued their recent hot streak with a 7-0 victory over Northview. The Raiders will face Kennesaw Mountain in next week’s second round. … Meanwhile in today’s boys action, Region 5-AA champion Spencer will host Region 6-AA No. 4 Lovett after the Greenwaves captured the program’s first region title. Spencer has won 10 straight after starting the year 0-2-1.
