PREPS: Host Hornets take top honors for boys and girls at Roswell Relays

Home sweet home!

On a beautiful afternoon Saturday at Roswell High School, the Roswell girls and boys track teams ran away with big wins at the prestigious Roswell Relays.

The girls took first place with 97 points, followed by Hillgrove (67.5), Chamblee (51), Woodstock (41) and Tucker (36.5). On the boys’ side, the Hornets finished on top with 66.5 points, followed by Brookwood (55), North Hall (48), Creekside (46) and Hillgrove (44).

Every year, the Rotary gives out an award for the top girls and boys participants and for the girls, Chamblee’s Alyssa Felton had a huge day, finishing first in the long jump and 4×100 relay as well as the 300 meter hurdles. Michael Newton of Sprayberry won the boys’ honors.

Newton collected first in the 100 meters and long jump, second in the 4×100 relay and third in the 1,600 distance medley relay.

The Relays, co-sponsored by the Roswell Rotary Club and Roswell High School, included more than 25 high schools and dates back to the 1950’s.

The day was marked by strong performances in the 100-meter races. For the girls, Angelica Henderson of Chamblee won with a time of 12.49 seconds followed by Viveca Jones (12.57) of Douglas County and Maya Ramsey (12.77) of Woodstock. For the boys, a Chamblee runner again took the honors as Josh Holsey ran a 10.78, finishing ahead of Evan Berry (10.78) of Creekview and Sprayberry’s Newton (10.98).

In the girls’ 4×100 meter race, Chamblee (Felton, Lauren Martin, Nakeyla Hicks and Angelica Henderson) won with a time of 49.27 seconds followed by Hillgrove (49.77) and Tucker (50.10). Hillgrove’s Jabri Hunt-Day won the boys discus with a throw of 155-06 feet while Cedric Stadom (155-03) of Lassiter finished second and Taylor Green (142-07) was third.

Roswell’s Shelby Barker and Tucker’s Tamera Harris shared first for the girls’ high jump (5.04) while Newton of Sprayberry (22-00.75) won the boys long jump followed by Roswell’s Obos Ikpefan (20-11.75).
