Prince Avenue has its next great quarterback waiting in the wings. The Wolverines have become known for developing quarterbacks at an unprecedented level. While many schools rely on upperclassmen transfers, Prince Avenue has seen quarterback after quarterback wait their turn and then head to the Power Four level.
Gavin Hollum appears to be next in line. The class of 2029 player has yet to even reach high school, but he has already received his first FBS offer, from the University of South Florida. While still young, he shows all the skill and talent to be an elite quarterback at both the high school and college levels. Though raw, as any 14-year-old would be, he demonstrates both the arm strength and pocket presence needed to play the position at a high level. In his 8th-grade season, he threw for 1,151 yards and 18 touchdowns while completing 64 percent of his passes, leading his team to a 9-0 record.
The Wolverines will be under new leadership in 2024 after the departure of longtime coach Greg Vandagriff. Former offensive coordinator Jon Richt will take over after four years of calling plays. During that time, he helped lead the Wolverines to two state titles and two finals appearances, while developing current Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo into one of the most prolific passers in state history.
For the next two seasons, Hollum will likely back up 3-star junior starter Ben Musser. Musser played a major role in Prince Avenue’s state title run last year. He threw for 1,472 yards and 15 touchdowns, adding 768 rushing yards and eight more scores. His best performance came in the state championship, where he passed for 159 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns, accounting for all four of the Wolverines’ scores.
Musser and Hollum are the latest in a line that has produced two Power Four starting quarterbacks in the past five years. Brock Vandagriff and Aaron Philo both started games last season. While Vandagriff retired after the season, Philo is entering his sophomore year and is expected to be the full-time starter by 2026.
