After falling to River Ridge in the finals of last year’s Brent Key/Corky Kell 7-on-7, Roswell got revenge in the best way, dominating bracket play on their way to the championship.
They started out slowly, losing two of their first three games in pool play, including a 31-17 blowout loss to Parkview in the first game of the day. However, the senior leadership of quarterback Trey Smith helped turn things around. When asked about that leadership, Coach Jonathan Thompson said.
“We have guys that have been through the fire. We’ve got a senior quarterback that’s been through the fire. We’ve got some skill kids that have been through the fire. We challenged them today. We said, ‘You got hit in the mouth early, how are you going to respond?’ I think we did a great job of rallying together and playing for one another.”
Bracket play was mostly a cakewalk for the Hornets, with only one game, their second-round matchup against GAC, being decided by fewer than seven points. Perhaps their most impressive win came in a rematch with Parkview, where they won 31-10 after giving up the first eight points. The championship game was more of the same, with the Hornets’ offense being unstoppable, scoring on every drive except the final one, when they let the clock expire.
This victory should be a sign of things to come, and it’s much needed, as Roswell competes in one of the toughest regions in the state, alongside Milton, Gainesville, and Lanier. Overall, the program looks to be in good hands under Coach Thompson, who takes over for the departed Chris Prewett.
