Cardinal Newman (Fla.) at IMG Academy (Fla.) Streamed Live and Free Here
Class 3A Cardinal Newman comes off a 34-27 loss to 5A Boynton Beach. Travis Rudolph headlines the Crusaders’ aerial attack and hauled in 10 catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Quarterback Daniel Cole went 19-of-32 for 278 yards and found Jon Sefchick for an explosive 68-yard score. Junior Andrew Owers contributed with seven catches for 54 yards.
IMG Academy is participating in the program’s first varsity season and is lead by 6-foot-4 quarterback Michael O’Connor. The Penn State commit is 24 of 47 passing for 358 yards and three touchdowns on the season. Bo Scarborough committed to Alabama last week, and the explosive offensive weapon and has 166 yards rushing on 23 carries this season. Junior Clark Thomas has eight receptions for 164 yards, and junior offensive tackle Tyree St. Louis is a 6-foot-5, 302-pound 4-star. IMG Academy topped North Miami Beach 30-15 last week.
Calhoun (Ga.) at Carrollton (Ga.) Streamed Live and Free Here
The Calhoun Yellow Jackets visit Carrollton in an inter-classification game between two traditional Georgia football powers. Calhoun was runner-up in Class 2A last winter and won last year’s matchup 46-35. Both teams are 2-0. Carrollton, 8-4 in 4A last year, is coming of a 63-0 win over Chapel Hill last week.
The Trojans have several future college players on the roster including defensive tackle Dontavius Russell, a University of Georgia commit, and Cole Cook (N.C. State). Calhoun’s defense will give Carrollton a tough test. The Yellow Jackets have not allowed a point all season. Last week, they allowed just a safety in their 17-2 win over Dalton.
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) at Curtis (La.) (Mercedes Benz Superdome)
There is no high school game this week, or maybe even this season with more college recruits than this matchup. Curtis is the defending 2A Louisiana state champ and features major recruits in WR Malachi Dupre, LB Kenny Young, DB Terrence Alexander, DB Mattrell McGraw, DB Hunter Dale, WR Henry Smith, RB George Moreira, RB Raekwon James, DB Prine Lewis, DB Arvin Huff and RB Myles Washington.
St. Thomas Aquinas is the defending 7A Florida state champion and rolls into the Super Dome with QB Wade Freebeck, DT Anthony Moten, 4-star receivers Corey Holmes and Devante Peete, defensive backs Al Harris Jr. and Kamal Hardy, RB Madre London, LB Nicholas Richardson, DT Colton Lynn, DE Wyatt Ray, and offensive linemen Kair Absheer, Tyler Dever, Nick Linder and Ryan Crozier.
Byrnes (S.C.) at Northwestern (S.C.)
Undefeated Byrnes comes off an 82-49 win over Woodruff (S.C.) and undefeated Northwestern comes off a 65-7 win over South Aiken (S.C.). This matchup is a true quarterback duel and features Byrnes’ 4-star gunslinger Shuler Bentley and Northwestern’s Mason Rudolph, who is committed to Oklahoma State.
Rudolph went 17 of 23 passing last Friday and tossed five touchdowns before sitting early in the third quarter with a comfortable 42-0 Trojans lead. Wideout Dupree Hart caught three second-quarter touchdowns, and Quadarius Fair has hauled his sixth touchdown on the season.
If anyone has the ability to out duel Rudolph, it is Shuler who led Byrnes to a 32-28 victory over Northwestern last year by tossing five touchdown passes. Shuler is red-hot heading into this year’s matchup after breaking the South Carolina state record for most touchdowns in a game last week. Shuler threw nine touchdown passes and gained 530 yards through the air, also adding a rushing score on the historic night.
Memphis Central (Tenn.) at Whitehaven (Tenn.)
Defending Class 3A Tennessee state champion Whitehaven was led by Ramadi Warren’s three second-half touchdowns last week that propelled the visiting Tigers to a 27-19 victory over White Station (Tenn). Warren scored a 55-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and added two scores in the final minutes of the game.
The explosive Deddrick Thomas paces Memphis Central, who comes off a Week 2 win over Mitchell (Tenn.) and a tough 26-24 loss to Melrose (Tenn.) last week. Thomas has the ability to make plays out of the backfield and down field as a receiver. The Warriors look to avenge last season’s 48-0 loss to Whitehaven and improve on its 5-5 2012 campaign.
South Panola (Miss) at North Little Rock (Ark.)
North Little Rock scored its first touchdown of the season just 12 seconds into the game when Khalil Gulley intercepted Lake Hamilton’s (Ark.) first past attempt last week and returned it for a touchdown. The Charging Wildcats continued hitting big plays and Arkansas-commit Juan Day ran in an 89-yard touchdown to cap a 41-0 halftime lead. North Little Rock went on to win the game 55-14.
South Panola is the defending 6A Mississippi state champ, and holds impressive wins over White Station (Tenn.), West Point (Miss.) and Meridian (Miss.) this season. Last Friday the Tigers were tied 7-7 with Meridian at the half, but wore out the Meridian defense with running back Darrell Henderson, who gained 253 yards and scored three touchdowns for South Panola in the first three quarters. The Tigers went on to win 34-14.
