The latest edition of the spring practice tour led me to a familiar team and one that is always in the Corky Kell Classic in the Brookwood Broncos.
Players to watch:
Brayden Tyson- Tyson broke onto the scene as a true freshman and has continued to develop as one of the best running backs in the country. One thing you can never question is his physicality and effort. You can see it as he finishes this run. Always brings it on every play. In 2024, he rushed for 2,123 yards and 26 touchdowns. Has every offer you could think of and is only getting better. He picked up an offer from Mississippi State this past weekend.
Zayden Walters- Big Zayden “Zeus” Walters catches your eye at 6’4 and 320 pounds. The offensive lineman has had a productive winter and spring and was active in spring practice, creating holes for running backs and being an anchor in pass protection. He has a strong lower body that allows him to get off the ball quickly and move defensive linemen.
Julian Elzey- Elzey is an all-around special player. He’s primarily a safety, but I got the chance to see him play some offense, and I left more impressed. His ability to create separation at the top of the route caught my eye. Not sure if Brookwood will use him on offense, but he made a case that he will do just fine at WR. Elzey recently picked up offers from Miami and Virginia Tech. It won’t be long until he is a national prospect.
Bryce Green- Green has been one of my favorite running backs to cover. He possesses speed, power, and agility all in one running back. He will run you over and use his burst of speed to break away. Green is another talented running back in the Broncos running back room.
ATH Deyron Groce- Brookwood has a deep running back group in addition to Brayden Tyson. 2026 RB Deyron Groce is a versatile back who can run between the tackles, catch it out of the backfield, and make plays. He can also play the slot receiver making him an even more dangerous weapon. His playmaking ability will be one to watch this season @Dey23Groce
Storylines:
New Quarterback: Brookwood has a new quarterback at the helm in Gary Chatman Jr. Chatman Jr is a dual-threat quarterback who throws a tight spiral. He showcased some of his running ability throughout practice. He will have a ton of playmakers to get the ball to this upcoming season.
Up-tempo offense: Brookwood ran a lot of up-tempo offense in practice and could signal a new change under head coach Chad Nighbert. The Broncos started practice with an up-tempo pace, running about 4-5 plays in less than 20 seconds, moving up and down the field quickly. The pace at which they ran practice could be an indicator of more of what is to come in 2025.
Defensive Back Room: Brookwood has a talented defensive back room and could be one of the better ones in the state. We mentioned Elzey earlier, who will man the safety position, but he didn’t run with the defensive backs at practice, instead ran with the wide receivers. However, Kris Brunson, Zy’Aire Conaway, Sean King, Damyon Pearson, and Tyson Boothe all flashed at practice. All of these kids have their own unique traits, but together they make a special group that flies to the ball, can cover well, and is very technically sound. A lot of the time, you will see a super-talented defensive back, but the rest of the secondary lacks. This is not the case with Brookwood, as they all can fulfil their role and thrive in it.
Brookwood should be a competitive team in 2025 with a chance at making a run with the pieces they have returning back and the play at certain skill positions. You can get a good look at the Broncos in the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic in August.
