SWIMMING AND WRESTLING NOTEBOOK

Brookwood swept the Falcon Duals this past weekend in Dacula by defeating the host Falcons as well as South Forsyth, Cherokee, Centennial and Jackson County. The Broncos received outstanding individual performances from Drew McCorkle (113 and 120), Gordon Lopez (145) and Stephen Solamon (160), who each went 5-0 for the tournament. Here are some more wrestling notes: 

The Parkview Thanksgiving Duals takes place today and will feature some of the top teams from North Georgia. Peachtree Ridge, Alexander, Union Grove, Loganville and Parkview highlight the 10-team field. The field from Class AAAA is especially crowded with quality teams, as last year in the traditional wrestling state championships Union Grove placed second, Alexander placed fifth and Loganville placed sixth. … In Class AA, Greater Atlanta Christian got off to a strong start at the D. Marlowe Duals hosted by Banks County. The Spartans went 4-0 in the tournament defeating Oglethorpe County, Dunwoody and Banks County. The match against the Leopards was a rematch of last year’s Class AA third-place match at the team duals state championship. Seven Spartan wrestlers went 4-0 in the tournament. … Whitewater won the West Hall Spartan Slam this past weekend over some stiff competition including second-place West Forsyth, which placed fourth in last year’s Class AAAAA team duals. The Wildcats will look to continue their early-season success and be a surprise contender in Class AAAA.

Swimming

With the graduation of six strong swimmers and divers, Peachtree Ridge hopes to defend its boys state title behind butterfly specialist Corey Mills, freestyler Drew Wescoat and backstroker Guido Saccaggi. Despite the losses, the Lions have high hopes on the season “I am hoping that my boys will finish in the top eight,” said head coach Jeremy Laird. … Over the weekend at the Cobb Relays, the Marietta girls team, led by Jessica Lin Sang, Tatiana Allgeyer, Annie Martin and Emma Mills, qualified for the state meet in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays with times of 1:52 and 4:11, respectively. … At the Norcross Invite over the weekend, the Walton Raiders swept the boys (288-242) and girls (291-226) titles with a combined score of 579 to second-place Norcross’ 468. Davis Beauchamp won the 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:02.78 to lead the boys to a score of 288 and Charlotte Holtz earned victories in the 50- and 200-meter freestyle with times of 26.0 and 1:59.50 respectively. Jack Dunning and Jake Williams also had top performances, with Dunning winning the boys 500-meter free in 4:51.89 and Williams finishing in first in the 100-meter free in 51.84. Kira deBruyn won the girls 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:00.96 and the 200 IM in 2:10.93.
